Driving through the Gotthard

I am due to drive down to Ticino in the coming weeks and I'm a little apprehensive about driving through the Gotthard tunnel after the accident in it last year. I've never driven through such a long tunnel before. I read that it takes about 15 minutes to get through (after the hours of queuing) and some people mention turning your dashboard lights and head lights low. Any other tips?

Re: Driving through the Gotthard

its fine unless you're tired. usually no queue this time of year either. its easy to fall asleep. turn the heating off, open window if you feel sleepy.

i've resorted to singing loudly, pulling my hair and slapping myself in that tunnel before after all night drives from england.

Good luck, I hate the Gotthard. Fortunately, the easiest way to Ticino for us is on the car-train through the Simplon.

Thanks, that sounds like a much better option.

No a good idea, as it's not actually straight.

But it's a bit out of your way if your heading to Bellinzona/Lugano from Zurich.

I've missed three of them, every time, as I only count one.

Just reading from Google maps, (from North) a right as you enter, a very very slight kink to the left roughly as you pass under Andermatt, another left roughly in the middle and a last left as you exit. The entry and exit ones are technically within the tunnel, if only just.

True, i meant that car train! When will they have that option to go through the new base tunnel?

Never.

However, there were car trains before they built the car tunnel.

Re: Driving through the Gotthard

Well, a boring answer here:
I hate tunnels. What I do when having to go through, for exampel, the Gotthard tunnel: I check how long it is (it says so when you enter) and I check my mileometer.

Whenever I get the feeling I must have missed a turn and I'm on my way to Australia I can check my mileometer and know how much longer it takes.

Nothing wrong with a boring answer if it's useful...that's a good tip!

Re: Driving through the Gotthard

Well, I drove through the Gotthard in 1974 with a BUICK 1958 which was shipped from the USA to Antwerp. As I approached Basel driving through Germany the Carburetor started acting funny. It was a OK drive till the long uphill drive to Goeschenen, where I had to to put the car in second gear just to be able to move. Driving into the tunnel was to say the least quite a experience as I did not know if the car would make it. It is a slight uphill till the middle of the tunnel and I was holding my breath. It finally made to the center of the tunnel and afterwords is is a slight downhill and the weight of car made it easer to coast all the way to Lugano where I had the carburetor rebuilt the week after.
