Car Suggestion : Import or Not

Dear Everyone,

We are relocating to Switzerland - Vaud Canton from Dubai in last week of March .

We have a BMW 5 series 1 year old and we have used the vehicle very less and its almost in new condition .

We are evaluating on either to sell the car here and will get another car (whatever good car people prefer in Swiss) or to take the car with us.

What is your suggestion on this ?

Our company is not paying us for car shipping so we need to bear the shipping and registration cost .

How its in Switzerland ? People prefer to buy or take in lease ? Is it a good idea to take this car with us?

Thanks.

Re: Car Suggestion : Import or Not

First of all, the driver's seat is on the left side in Switzerland and i guess in Dubai it is right handed. so you will have follow some procedures (which i dont know fully) both customs wise and also with the transport office here to legalise your vehicle to be driven here. it is also not easy to drive a right hand car on Swiss roads because all the rules are opposite to what they are in Dubai.

About buying or leasing, buying is very expensive (you will be shocked with the prices of new 5 series) but it is mainly for those who are coming long term or will settle here. for short term assignments, i think leasing is better as you will not have the headache of selling the car when you leave. but be careful to take care of the car if it is leases as Swiss garages are notoriously known to charge high costs (even for minute damages) when you come out of the lease.

cheers

Bring the car with you. The cost of getting it here will be much less than the depreciation hit if you sell it there, + the cost of purchasing even a cheap car here in CH.

You will be able to bring it with you without paying an import tax as you have owned the car more than a year.

You may have some expense to get it through an MFK if you need to change things like turn signal colours or such, but it _probably_ won't need any work.

Thanks.

Re: Car Suggestion : Import or Not

It all depends on for how much you can sell your car in Dubai, and what would it cost to buy an equal car here. Sure cars loose a lot of value in the first year, but the same goes for a one year old car you would buy here, and you would save on transport costs and paperwork.

Re: Car Suggestion : Import or Not

Hmm..Difficult choice I see ..But as I think its an almost a new car for us , very less used - better to take it along.

Yet - we need to check on transport and paper work.

Hopefully - we there is no other cost for car other than registration and shipping.

Thanks.

Yeah, but I heard the road between Vevey and Lausanne is quite dangerous....

Re: Car Suggestion : Import or Not

do you speak french and expect to have a fair bit of time on your hands after arriving? if not the expect the registration process to be real hassle with a lot of back and forth. as the car was not sold into europe new it is less straightforward. for a comodity car you'd save yourself a lot of effort selling and re-buying (or leasing) in CH. when you eventually do sell the car in CH it will be more difficult and fetch less than original swiss matriculated models.

source of info: i imported an M5 from US to CH (fortunately i have no plans to even sell that one). i've imported a few other cars from europe to CH. i've imported many cars between UK/US/Germany in all directions previously.

there is. the import might be tax free but still costs admin fees and the test required for registration will carry a cost (each time!). the insurance on a foreign registered car will be more. this will likely all amount to a couple of thousand even if you do it all yourself. shipping is absolutely negligible. finally the registration cost will be the same as a local model.

- the test costs hardly anything, it's basically just an MFK

- insurance need not be more expensive, you can run for a year on a green card if your current insurance allow it

I'd guess in total I saved 10'000 CHF based on cheaper vehicle, cheaper insurance, minus some minimal costs.

not in ticino. non eu imports have a fixed 500 chf 'mfk' fee. normal cost is 80.

Re: Car Suggestion : Import or Not

Even if you started shipping the car today, it would take at least a couple of months if not more til you got it back and could drive it (shipping, border clearance, documents admin etc) thinking of previous experience with cars from HK or even Italy.

If you don't plan to stay "forever" in Switzerland, leasing is the way to go. I guess you need a car to go to work, so at least this way you could have it from day one.

Honestly - you are a bit obnoxious. You keep on asking the same sort of questions a thousand people asked before you on here. I'd be much more inclined to help if you'd show any sort of effort to find information on your own and then only confirm it with us.

You can import your car to CH. It is not as bad as people think.
I imported my Right Hand Drive UK car into Switzerland a few years ago, apart from the Import duties and the MFK , there was not much else .

One thing to note though, your car must be sparkling clean including the engine - show room standard or else it will fail the MFK.

Buying a car in CH is quite expensive and as earlier said, if you already pre- own the car, you can bring it as part of your personal effect when you eventually relocate to CH.
