Re: Why does EVERYONE drives faster than the speed limit?

(Not encouraging to drive over the limits)
My perception is that speed limits, especially when the road is somehow empty, are too low. If the road is empty, and I am driving at 120, I feel like I am going slow. Cannot explain why...it is what it is.

I believe also other individuals have the same perception and this can explain why so many people tend to drive a little bit faster than what's allowed.

I think 150 sounds more like a reasonable threshold assuming no traffic, no rain/ice, fairly wide and straight road etc...

Chances of getting caught are actually quite slim.

32 years of driving here, only two fines over CHF 60 (and perhaps a 5 at CHF 60 or less), and never a ban.

Tom
You're so wrong, Tom. With all the speed cameras nowadays, the chances are quite high.

Honestly i have no idea... seems that i was the only one following the rules
1. Most speed indicators are deliberately showing a reading of around 7% more than the real speed.
2. In Switzerland you can drive 3km/h faster than the maximum speed and still not get a fine.

So for example in my former car, Renault Megane, I used to set the cruise control to 128 in 120 areas.
I verified this with a Tomtom GPS, that when the car reports to be doing 128, the GPS reports it's exactly 123, which is the highest speed that will yield no fines.

Since I've started doing this several years ago, I've never got a fine and I've driven past multiple speedcams. Mobile ones as well.

Very few around here, and most are not loaded.

One on the highway.

the roads in the EU are good compared to some other parts of the world, that's why going 120 can feel boring and one can loose focus. Still it is quite fast.

however, there are multiple aspects to it, such as the CO2 emission and noise level. Let us not destroy the environment even further. By 150 the consumption level is disproportionally higher.

As far as the time is concerned, my personal pick is to cut off useless web-surfing, irrelevant youtubing.

Correct, there are multiple components that I deliberately didn't touch on: safety, emissions, risk of accidents, fines...

I only mentioned the reason "why" someone would drive faster than limits

...a bit of apples and oranges here...

- Speedcams calculate and record velocity, time/distance traveled within the sampling interval which is very accurate, and then apply programmed tolerances before striking you with lightning or not.

- you car records rotational data then applies a standard wheel circumference (distance traveled) to calculate speed. The actual circumference is a factor of the distance between the center of the wheel hub and the ground which will vary with non-standard tire size, tire pressure, tire temp, tire wear, etc. .

You can't rely on your car's speedifications to walk a fine line between blitz and no blitz.

Wow, you misunderstood what I wrote:
1. Cars' speed gauges are mostly inaccurate.
2. I use a GPS with speed measurement in order to get an accurate reading.

You missed point 2 completely.
You tried to further support point 1, believing I am somehow opposing it.

Must agree! After driving on the Autobahn thru Germany. When one enters Switzerland its like snail pace driving even at 130.

You're able to adapt? The times I get from Basel to Wintethur the fastest is when I come from Germany. May also have to do with having "Stalldrang" (stalll-urge?) after 6-8 hours driving through Germany and being on the last miles.

Some people drive fastter than the authorised speed limits thinking that they know exactly where the raddars are but end up being caught as the authorities are constantly changing the locations

To all those on this thread who say they only stay in the outside line and they only go faster than the legal speed limit:

What do you do if someone comes up behind you and is going faster than you?

I appreciate you may not even notice them if you are in your own little world, but if you did?

I think it depends a very lot on location and time. For instance there are literally zero speed cameras during rush hours on the A1 east of Uzwil/Oberbüren.

Or they just don't flash as due to traffic-jam everyone crawls at 50km/h on the highway?

Actually I just realized this is a weird question. I don't know any country, where drivers are as obedient on the roads like in Switzerland. Nederlands maybe .... but not really, after all the police used to drive porsches to make sure they could catch up with culprits, LOL. (Do they still?)

Did you ask because in Uruguay traffic is so well-ordered and relaxed. Just like in Ecuador, right?

Think the police for the autobahns are more in unmarked cars these days, more to avoid stupid people making panic moves that cause accidents when they see a marked police car than being sneaky.
