Gotthard tunnel (again)

I know you are all holding your breath for a foolish question. so, here goes. I can't find the opening hours of the Gotthard tunnel. I think it is 05.00-22.00 buy can't be sure. We are planning to go to Venice tomorrow and would like to avoid queues so are quite willing to get there for 5am, but would like to make it an hour or so later if I am wrong. Any answers please?

Why would the Gotthard tunnel close and for what reason?

  • June 23/24 to June 26/27 2008 (4 nights) from 8.00 pm to 05.00 am
  • June 30/July 1 to July 3/4 2008 (4 nights) from 8.00 pm to 05.00 am
  • Sept. 8/9 to Sept. 11/12 2008 (4 nights) from 8.00 pm to 05.00 am
  • Sept. 15/16 to Sept. 18/19 2008 (4 nights) from 8.00 pm to 05.00 am

Re: Gotthard tunnel (again)

I did not think that it closed at night. But as the traffic jams are so horrendous i would go as early as possible.

Have a great time in Venice - it is my most favourite place

Re: Gotthard tunnel (again)

There doesn't seem to be any information about closures at the moment, but maybe it's a trap to get you to the Portal before they shut it up for the night after all.

For up-to-date Infos about problems, try this one.

Good luck and have a good journey.

Re: Gotthard tunnel (again)

Thanks to all who replied. Seems I was wrong (again). We look forward to arriving at Gotthard at 05.00 tomorrow morning and then taking a leisurley drive down to Venice - or Venus as the doctor I saw today called it. Our daughter was thrilled by the idea of space travel.

Let her down gently, won't you.
When we first moved to England our daughter told us she was going on a school trip the next day. We couldn't quite work out why she was so excited until she explained that they would be going by coach, fantastic. Then light dawned. The previous weekend, we had been in London and looked at the Royal State Coach in all its glory...
