Can't you just leave the old stickers on? Then you can collect a long set of variously-coloured stickers to display with pride, no?

It would take quite a few years for the driver's vision to become seriously obscured, I'd have thought.
Lot of people do that, saw one with 12 vignettes the other day.

I just very gently slowly and steadily peel them off starting with a fingernail, paying attention to the splits in the sticker. So far has always come off in one or two pieces without leaving residue on the screen.
Two pieces? You mastered the art! Mine came of in 50 pieces with the fingernail method, but wouldn't buy a dedicated tool just to get it off.

It's only 40 chuffs - so not worth the hassle. A couple of hours on a French motorway will cost you more.

Guess what! Keeping the old stickers is illegal as well

Here is the one link that describes the fact that the sticker must be stuck on and not taped or else you will be fined during a control.

It does not cover the multiple sticker issue (since this link is provided for foreigners). Will see what I can find as I know that having only one sticker is the law.

From memory, it is also printed on the back of the sticker (someone can maybe confirm that for us).

Here is a Federal government link in French that "asks" you to remove the old ones. I still think I have read that it is illegal to have multiple ones on the car. Have not seen anything official yet.

confirmed that I sailed through Chiasso recently with just a quick glance from the border Swissie there.

not only does your 12 vignette collection in the screen look pikeyish, it also obscures your vision hence the "law"...

Yes, sometimes it comes off in two pieces. This time (just now) in one...

This time I used just a little warmth from a hairdryer first just to make it a bit more flexible. Too much and the glue goes sticky soft and leaves a horrible residue.

Yeah, I guess that makes sense, as it says, "pour favoriser la visibilité". Although they don't say whether they mean the driver's visibility or the ease with which the officials can quickly visually check whether you've got a current one (without looking through all the old ones).

I'd have thought that a few stickers might be a kind of badge of pride, like "I'm like a local I've been here for so long", but obviously if it gets to 12 then it's time to buy a new car

Can pikeys (hate that word) afford to drive through Switzerland every year on holiday now?

Re: Swiss Autobahn Vignette (removal)

Heads up, your 2010 Vignette will expire in a few days ( on 31-1-2011)

My 2010 vignette was quick and easy removed with the "metal" ice scraper.

Don't bother scraping with a plastic one, i won't work..
This tool however( see picture ) is quick and nifty.

Removal of the sticky residue was done with nail polish remover, but works with any kind of alcohol.

Thanks guys ~
We are coming from Germany (Baden-Baden) and have hotels booked in Luzerne and Lugano, then onto Italy. Do we need similar vignettes for the other countries, or just Switzerland?
Only for Switzerland

Of course if they don't stop you at the border you might get away with it as a tourist!

Not really. If they spot you on the motorway without a vignette, it'll be a fine + cost of buying one.

Re: Swiss Autobahn Vignette (removal)

Well I would agree that it might not be worth the risk, however how many times have you driven through the border control and it has been unmanned?

I have and on most occasions that has been the case. How would a Tourist buy a Vignette otherwise?

It's a different matter for residents of course.

Came to Switzerland as a tourist before, customs just take you to a seperate lane and make you buy a vignette.

To enter Switzerland, you have to enter a border, if no one is at the border ( rarely) then you have to purchase it at the next available petrolstation or post office.

When your car requires its MFK, it will fail if you've not taken the old ones off. However, if that's the only fail, they tell you to take it off, but don't check.

This is from experience. Sorry, no link.

Thanks for the hairdryer tip!

Just removed my Vignette. Only took one minute to remove it and another minute to clean the remaining glue.

Me too - did it last night for the first time (nothing like leaving it until the last minute, even though the vignette had been in my wallet for a month!)

I used pure alcohol to clean off the residue, and used the same methodology to remove my old UK tax disk holder too!
