Stopped at the border for 40 minutes

Hi All,

I was stopped at the border coming into Basel from Germany.
I don't think anything looked suspicious in my appearance: the car is 2 years old - standard color, regular model and recently washed. No shopping bags or any visible packages on the seats. I'm dressed just like any other office worker.

They gave me a drug test using a swab.
They've searched the car- trunk, glove compartment, under the seats.
They said they were checking my passport because it looked fake - but for 20 minutes.
Every once in a while one of them went by my car, probably to check how nervous I look like. I looked bored and tired.

I think they've got a new profile of a wanted person in mind- lone guy, regular car, no shopping bags. Probably they're on the lookout for a specific drug smuggler.

I can't avoid thinking- why are there no background questions, such as "why are you entering?" "what is your destination?" "what do you do for a living?" "have you got a family in Switzerland?".

I was thinking- is it possible to obtain a written note from them that I was examined upon entry, held for 40 minutes and passed a drug test successfully?

Re: Stopped at the border for 40 minutes

The longest I've been stopped for is about 10 mins, its a small price to pay for the hundreds of times I've crossed without incident. In your case it could have been something as silly as their database being down, hence the long wait...or it could have been intelligence-led e.g. you fit the vague description of an international hit-man on his way to Davos

So your car and your appearance were doing their best to blend in, exactly what any drug smuggler would do, it's not as though drug smugglers turn up at the border with a banner saying they are a drug smuggler.

Why should they give you note, so the next time you turn up at the border with a car full of drugs you present the note and they won't search you and you get in without any problems??

Reality is they were either bored or they randomly stop a number of people and do a thorough examination.

I always think that when entering Switzerland all they’re interested in is people importing meat and people who look foreign. When entering Germany, all they’re interested in is old people importing cash.

Yes, during these ten years of living in Switzerland and crossing the border hundreds of times, I was rarely inspected - four times overall.
However this is the second time I'm being stopped in recent days, and the recent two times were nothing like the first two.
Back then it was like "bringing lots of fresh meat, ey?".
Now it's more of a police interrogation/arrest.

In any case, I am informing people here because they should be prepared when they cross the border- go to a restroom, have something to eat in case it takes hours, have the mobile battery fully charged etc.

That swab isn’t just for drugs, it is for residues of explosives, gunpowder, etc. Even if they say it’s for drugs, it can detect lots more than that.

But don’t tell anybody, it is a secret.

Re: Stopped at the border for 40 minutes

Well, I think most people should be concerned about such a swab test.
Who knows how sensitive is it really?
I mean I've been to some parties where I can't be really sure what the others are smoking, and whether the their smoke leaves any residues on me

I've never smoked anything my entire life - not cigarettes and not anything else.

p.s. Pachyderm, what is it? Care to elaborate?

Something to eat????
You're over egging it a bit there.

Last Wednesday at lunchtime the Grenzewachekommabdo or whatever thay are called were at every border from Germany to Basel, even at the tunnnel entrance to Allschwil, well inside the border, and parked up at Foundation Tingleuy, obviously they were on a mission.

I didn't mean to have a full meal beforehand.
I meant to have a snack or something, and of course water because it's quite hot these days and you are told to wait in your car for the entire time.

.
Nice guess, but no.
I've meant that I'd like to be able to prove:
1. That I was inspected for x minutes.
2. That I was asked whether I agreed to do a drug test.
3. That I gave my consent to the test.
4. That the result was negative.

What if one doesn't agree to number 2. Is the wait then 40 days?

Re: Stopped at the border for 40 minutes

its not so related with border but in 2015, i visited basel by train to see my friend from bern to basel and in olten, i was a bit sleepy, I saw that two young guys (around 30-35) with backpacks coming to my side and I close my eyes and when I opened my eyes I saw that they were standing in front of my seat. I was listening also something with my headphone..

So I took of my headphone and he showed his police ID (or something like that), and then he asked me something in german. That time I did not understand german so I said, i cant speak german and he asked me can I see you Id and I showed and he started to ask some question, where I am going, what I am doing in Switzerland. I said I am visiting a friend in basel and I do my master degree in fribourg etc.. and he called somewhere and he said my ID number on the phone. After he said, could I see your back, I said yes, and he started to check. There was some books and clothes.. And there was a small pocket and he asked, what is in there, I opened it and told him its a dessert. And then they said its Ok.. and left..

1 year later I told it to my boss, he said that probably they searched drugs.. I felt really bad there because there were many people and directly come to me and even I did not behave suspicious because I did not know they were police.. It was interesting to me, first time that kind things happened to me..

But what is the point of having such a note, all it says is you where searched before, and has no bearing on the present if you get stopped/searched again just because you were clean before doesn't mean you will always be clean in the future

Call me a nitpick, but I get tested 10 times, and one happens to be contaminated, I'd like to have the former 9 results with me.

We were inspected only one time here, and they were looking for undeclared merchandise from Germany e.g. meat. I think we were among the few fools who had less than the admitted quantity. LOL.
It's a bizarre situation, yours, I think. I don't know how I would react. I have friends who were the only ones in a long line that were stopped and searched, no tests done luckily, and still felt humiliated. But they know it was because of the car plates (foreign). I hope they'll visit me again some day.

Which would, at best, show that you're a frequent target for testing, so confirming whatever bias might be at play in their decision to test you. I can see no situation in which having proof of previous tests would make things better for you.

Sense of humour failure?

Back to your original post, I understand the frustration this can cause. Being an almost daily border-crosser for many years I've often seen cars being pulled apart and wondered what the triggers were. I have to say that more often than not it seemed to be youngish, darkish-skinned males who were targeted, which may or may not apply to you, but sadly they are part of a demographic that attracts this most unwelcome and largely unjustified attention.

Unfortunately, as a demographic marker, if fits with observed results, so don't expect it to change anytime soon.
