Converting USA class D License to Swiss

Hello,
I recently moved to Switzerland from USA and I need to convert my license. Thanks to all the information in the forum, I managed to get all the documents together. However, I need your help to understand what category of license should I apply for if I have class D ( i.e. normal passenger car) license from USA? Please advise based on your experience.

You don't apply for any class, you simply exchange it and will be given the equivalent class(es) to what you have from your home country.

You actually do as you have to tick the appropriate classes on the application form. All classes you do not tick/apply for you will not get. If you do not tick anything you might get category B at best.

Once again, we have the problem that the issued US state is not named. A class D in Georgia is something else than a class D in Tennessee or a class D in Iowa.

Normal passenger cars up to 3.5 tons and 9 seats are "Category B". Hope that helps. You may want to tick BE as well in case your class D license allows you to pull heavy trailers. Cat C1 would be up to 7.5 tons and may need additional medicals.

Perhaps this varies from place to place, but I remember when I changed mine (UK) in BS I certainly did not. Which is why I, like many others, ended up with an extra category (vehicles over 3.5T) I neither wanted nor needed. I wouldn't have had a clue what class that was, and given that you need to have a periodic medical to retain it, I wouldn't have ticked it even if I had known.

So I'm pretty certain that any box-ticking was done, not by me, but by the person on the other side of the desk.

Do remember to check the M/C boxes (the tiny and big one) if you have an endorsement on your license.

The Services des automobiles in Lausanne has a conversion table from your original categories to swiss equivalences (for almost all countries in the world) and will automatically give you all the categories you are entitled to, unless you want to exclude some.
