flashes front/back/both?

Hey everybody,

I work just a few meters from a mobile speed camera (which comes back every few weeks), so sometimes it's disco time - and somehow I don't understand how exactly it is working.
I thought that the pictures were always taken from the front.
But it seems like sometimes it is flashing from the front, sometimes from the back, and sometimes both, front and back.
Does any of you know how they should be working? What could trigger the changes?
And do they shoot across the road, too? Or just on one lane?

Alternatively, would any of you lend me their car for a few scientific tests?

Re: flashes front/back/both?

If they only took the photo's from the front then bikers (both motorised and very motivated human powered) wouldn't have to worry about them.
Most of the mobile ones I see are hidden so as to take a photo of the back of a vehicle. Or just plonked so everyone can see them and they have a camera opening on both sides.

But why does it change between those 3 modes?
Does it sometimes fail to read the front plate and then decide to take a photo from the back again?

Re: flashes front/back/both?

I'm afraid my knowledge ends there, I've never observed one long enough.
As pure guesstimation it could be the speed at which you are approaching it.
If it senses you are over the limit but not fast enough that it can take a photo of your front, then one flash front. Too fast to reliably get a front photo, only the back, and in between 2 photos for good measure?
I wouldn't think it would be processing whether the plate is readable, I mean that whats google keeps asking us to teach the machines. I could be wrong of course, the plates are a standard size and font.
