I lost a plate in Italy some years back from a bike, so made a report at the local Carabinieri and made up a fake plate. That, and the report made me legal (not even sure that I needed the fake plate).

Next day, upon retuning to CH, I went to MFK with the report (after having phoned my insurance), and got a new plate immediately with a new number, it was they who told me 7 years if I wanted my old number back.

If an Italian loses a number plate, they are looking at several months to get a new plate.

Tom
Congratulations, you have reminded me of a boring anecdote:
Around a year ago I was on the A5 in Germany, driving southbound, around 150km from Basel.
A Porche with a Swiss ZH number plate overtook me, and its back plate just flew off the car, hit the road and broke into pieces.
Due to heavy traffic, I was able to catch the Porche, signal the driver to stop in a rest area and told her what happened.
She was like "I told those idiots that the temporary plate is going to fall off, and they assured me that they are professional"

On the practical level, you just need to switch the number plates (DO NOT FORGET! The fines are eye-watering...) to whichever car is being driven. There are some nifty solutions to help; I use a very slick magnetic system which is a little expensive but sooooo easy to use.
They should include a magnetic stripey stick as part of the kit to stick on the empty front plate-holder and remind you to change the plates.

Or a magnetised exact replica of your number plates, to remind you that you should pop your actual plates on...

On the cars, I've also done it where I forgot to swap just one of the plates!

Maybe you can add a sensor to the plates which would make an alarm when the car is started without the plates attached?

I've thought about that, but seems to be too much trouble.

Re: Two cars - only use one at a time.

Well I'm part way through the process.. Both cars now listed one policy, one plate. The speed took me a bit by surprise, we have an agent at work who I use for my insurances.. He sent me two proposals, one from each of the previous insurers.. I told him which one I preferred and a few hours later he told me it's all done, just go hand back a set of plates!

I just remembered today though that car two has a square rear plate (mini), and that's the plate we're giving up.. So I'll need to order a third plate!

Price wise for the insurance, I was 1500chf (partial) for the XC90 and 1200chf (full) for the mini before. Now it's 1300chf combined.
Both are still specified as full or partial on the new policy.

Don't know the price change for the plates / tax yet.

Re: Two cars - only use one at a time.

you can't order a 3rd plate, you'll need to decide what you want, a square one or normal one and change the holder on one of the cars, which you'll probably want to change anyway to something like the 'click' system.

Your new tax will be the higher of your two old tax amounts, plus something like CHF 55 (canton-dependent) for the luxury of having switchable plates.

Congratulations on saving well over CHF 2,000 p.a.!

They won't give me a plate that fits the car? The mini is a clubman/cooper thing, it's a totally different shape?

You mean I can get a holder for a square plate on the volvo? hadn't considered that.

You get two plates, one front and one rear, and that's it. You can't have extra plates, for obvious reasons.

Certainly, you could use a square plate on any car, if it fits, and there do exist magnetic holders (such as Perfect Click) for these.

correct, they will only allow you to have 2 plates, if you want to change one to square you have to hand the other one in etc.
