Minor speeding ticket converted to 2 days jail?

Visiting from US, I was speeding (under 20km over limit) caught on speed cam. The fine was under 200F. Long story short, I didn't pay the fine, I just returned from one month of vacation and found a letter stating that the canton of Basel had sentenced me to two days in jail. Anyone know if this term is 'commuted' if I pay the bill? Or do I now have to stay away from Switzerland for life if I don't want to go to jail? Thanks.

PS - no need for moral arguments that I should have paid the bill earlier. Water under the bridge. The question now is can I pay the bill and not go to jail.

Re: Minor speeding ticket converted to 2 days jail?

Your best bet would be to write to them. The mail you received should have an email address. Just write in English if your German isn't up to it.

Chances are they'd rather have your money (plus an extra admin fee) than waiting to jail you.

You don't mention whether it's Basel-Stadt or Basel-Land, but Basel-Stadt even has a nice on line portal where you can pay your fine conveniently by card.

200 chf is about the same price as a good hotel in Basel and includes 3 meals a day.
Plus you would meet some interesting people.

I don't think they would lock you up with the murderers and rapists.

Maybe it is a worthwhile lifetime experience to be shared with us later. I bet there is no sticky or thread describing the conditions. Give it a go ...

Still... I imagine it doesn't look great on your personal record to future employers or passport approvers that you actually went to jail?

Some rare ones might value the "I did it for the experience" explanation

If you go to jail for this, then rapist, pedophiles, thief's, etc, should then be EXECUTED?

A conviction with an unserved jail sentence just got you on the Schengen system, so you’ll need to stay out of most of Western Europe!

Re: Minor speeding ticket converted to 2 days jail?

You can pay anytime to avoid jail. Even in jail to avoid further days in jail.

Be aware that only the fine is converted to jail time. Administrative and court fees will remain as debt and can not be converted into jail time or community work.

https://www.baselland.ch/politik-und...reiheitsstrafe

http://www.strafgericht.bs.ch/gerich...htskosten.html

Not sure if such a short jail time will be listed on the rap sheet (criminal record/VORSTRA) or if it stays clean as the original punishment was a fine of less than CHF 5000.

I would imagine that a Swiss jail is more comfortable than hostels or motels is some parts of the world.

Pah, a paltry first world problem if ever I heard one. Being sent to a Swiss jail? There are starving people in the world that would beg to be sent to one. LUXURY I TELL THEE!

Start preparing now:

-Then you got to get sent to a slam, where they tell you you'll never see daylight again. You dig up a doctor, and you pay him 20 menthol Kools to do a surgical shine job on your eyeballs.

I really hope that our government sees the irrefutable logic of accepting a payment plus slap on the wrist charge (i.e. income) rather than sticking someone in jail for a minor offence (i.e. expense). If not, they are blooming idiots.

Yes, but they have cruel and unusual punishments, like fondue for lunch and muessli for dinner.

It sounds like a three star hotel in Olten. What a torture

If somebody is reasonable, why would they want to work for the government?

Didn't a Gambian also die in a motel in Iowa some years back?

So I wouldn't say it's safer there.

Why would anyone not want to work for the government? Easy hours, great benefits, wonderful pension, the opportunity to exercise megalomania... pay not so good, but the rest makes up for it.
