Are we talking about a fast Train? Regio / Inter Regio / IC / ICE etc. and not an S-Bahn? Because these carriages are actually indeed numbered. There is a little number outside of the carriage next to the City of Destination. Check next time. It's just a small number (one to ten or whatever) outside of the carriage next to the Destination of the Train in the LED illuminated sign. The numbers are also shown on the Screen showing where each section of the Train is located (on the Plattform). Sorry it's hard to describe. Will try to take some Pictures next time I am at the main Station in Zurich.
Thanks. But that's specifically an S-bahn..

Why not use a bus instead? It’s much shorter and no need to walk the length of the damned train

Is this a puzzle or has OP made it a sport to question every answer?

Every chair and every carriage has numbers, and yes that is how simple it is.
S-bahns don't have numbers. Do they?

Re: Finding someone inside a train

OK, this solution will take a bit of investment of money, time and effort, but it will work a treat.

Over the next few months, you need to stick an NFC tag next to every door of every carriage of every S-Bahn train you catch. It should only take a year or two before every door on the network is tagged. Each NFC tag should contain a unique identifying number. Keep a note of each number and sticker location.

As your friend boards the train, he should sweep his phone over the tag. It will tell him what its unique number is, which he will forward to you by whatever messaging platform you find most optimal

You will be able to cross-reference the unique number with your database of NFC sticker locations and voila! you've found your friend.

I don't know why I'm not a millionaire, you know.

They do in canton Zürich. For example, S4, S10 and S16.

Why not draw a number on every carriage? 1,2,3,4,..?

Because NFC tags are cool.

We have them all over the house, just because we can. We use them to turn the lights on and off...

Re: Finding someone inside a train

You could use the app "What Three Words"

For instance, the words Rocket, Revolts, Recover will take you to a location on track 10 at Zürich HB. https://map.what3words.com/rocket.revolts.recover

If you both go to that location, you will max be 3 meter away from each other. The downside is, it only works reliable, as long as the train does not move

Re: Finding someone inside a train

Meet next to the toilets which are not out of service.
Nowadays there are only one or two on a long train.
On smaller trains there is only one toilet in 2nd class.
Also you could meet in the buffet wagen.

The problem is that on long trains (and sometimes on not so long trains) they stick an engine in the middle of the line of carriages which you can't pass through so if you are meeting someone at the back of the train and they're at the front, you're stuffed. Or at least until the train stops at the next station and one of you can jump out and join the other further up the train.

The buffet car is a good suggestion, though.

Great idea, thanks. But doesn't solve my problem, unfortunately.

Our issue is not how to encode some geo coordinates, but how to acquire them in the first place. As I said, GPS doesn't perform indoors.

Thanks. Saying "the car that has a restroom" seems to work. S-bahns don't have buffets, unfortunately!

Re: Finding someone inside a train

Make all arrangements to meet anyone in a train with a fixed, easy-to-remember formula that suits you.

This one has worked, for meeting my friends in trains all over Switzerland, for years, with never a miss, probably because it is unambiguous:
"Let's meet in the second 2nd-class carriage from the front, in the direction of travel".

Setting it as the second, and not the first, carriage increases the likelihood of finding seats together. Should the carriage not suit someone in the group, we can easily move to another, after we've met up.

Front, back, in/after/before restaurant car, after/before change to first class, in/before/after silent zone, in business zone.

All these (and possibly more) are marked in the SBB app.
