500Fr for 5000km scooter maintenance?

Recently I bought an used Vespa scooter (125cc) for 900Fr. The mileage is 5000km, I took it to nearby Vespa dealer to check if I should change engine oil etc. The staff told me I should do a 5,000KM maintenance so I left it there for a week.

Today I received a SMS which said the maintenance is complete, and the cost is 500Fr. This is far beyond what I expect, does anyone know if this is reasonable and what should I do if it's not?

Re: 500Fr for 5000km scooter maintenance?

It is reasonable depending on what you agreed upon.

If you just gave them your scooter "yeah, do what you please, and no need to call me above a certain expected amount" you are lucky it is only 500,-

And a Vespa of 900,- sounds like it could have had some work done.

Do you have an itemized bill?

Re: EdwinNL: The bike's mileage is merely 5,000 and everything looks fine. For comparison, my car was worth over 100,000Fr and it had passed the guaranteed period. A regular maintenance at BMW dealer costs less than 100Fr, the most expensive ones are probably around 150Fr. Maybe it's apple to orange, but I just didn't understand how could that bill add up to 500 so quickly. And yes, it's switzerland and I tend to believe in most stores won't extort you at will

Not possible, the oil alone wil be CHF 200 or more!

Anyway, probably two hours work (250), oil, filters, sparkplug (100), maybe tires, it adds up.

How old is it?

Re: 500Fr for 5000km scooter maintenance?

Shop hour is around CHF 100 - 120.
Liter of oil > CHF 20 (total ripoff).
Break fluid and coolant should be changed every two years.

I have seen service for a LX 125 should take around 150 minutes.
https://www.manualslib.com/manual/85...5.html?page=27
Maybe more time when cooling and break fluid have to be changed too.

A regular service would be in the range of CHF 300 to 400 including labor, parts, and liquids.

PS: Were can I get a BMW serviced for CHF 100 - 150

You've gotta post details of your dealer... mine charges 900chf for a routine service...

I bought a 5 year old Honda PCX last year with just 4,000km.

Such little use meant it needed a new battery and other fluids changed and cost 350 for the owner to put back on the road. It had been sat in a corner of his garage gathering dust for the previous 3 years.

It looked cosmetically perfect, but such a low utilization was not particularly kind to the scooter.

Maybe BMW gives a discount when your car is 'worth over 100,000 Fr'

TIP: Earn back your 500,- and make a huge profit by selling the address to this garage for 100,-

A maintenance can only be so cheap if is a maintenance which was included when you bought it and you pay for some small not included extra they had to do.

If you really expected them to fix your scooter for 100,- you are very unfamiliar with the country you live in.

Extra tip: Scooters are mostly cheap means of transport if you do the maintenance yourself.

I presume this is because you bought the car with 100,000 Km worth of service included. In which case all you're paying for is fluids.

Otherwise you must have a very poor memory.

This.

So basically ask for an itemised bill (which I'm sure they will give you anyway when you collect it) and see what is included. Only then can you actually make a judgement.

Don't talk such utter rubbish please.

A garage charges about Chf 180/hour which covers the mechanic, his tools, the rent the software programs etc etc

Your Bayern Farmers wagon has "free Service" included which means that instead of paying when you have it done, you pay 100% up front for 100k km's

The bill sounds about right for a full service, got to be at least 1.5 hours work + materials

Re: 500Fr for 5000km scooter maintenance?

Received the itemized bill. Besides the store hour, the biggest item is "Pneu Hinten" and "Software update".

It seems most people here show great excitement about my car's garage. My car did come with three years of guaranteed where maintenance/fix were particularly cheap. I was expecting the fee went higher after my car had its 4th birthday but it didn't. I just complete the 40,000km maintenance and the bill is indeed less than 100Fr. I didn't check what is included and it's likely they didn't change oil for 40,000km. I can try to find the bill if it's not in the trash can already. Next time I'll spend more time chatting with BMW garage to figure out why their price level made me set wrong expectation of a scooter maintenance. I did point out this could be orange v.s. apple in the beginning so just wanna know if this is in reasonable range.

Nice bill, decent prices, not overdone on the hours. You could go there again.

Looks like they started with "500.00" and worked their way back. They could at least have made it 497.53 or something.

First rule in Switzerland is to ask how much. Then to ask how much is it to tell you how much but if you're getting almost free maintenance at BMW you should probably not question them about it.

There should be a book rate for the 5K service, so the OP ought to have asked first and said (presuming it wasn't too bad) "Sure, call me if anything else needs attention."

It does indeed look like they worked back from 500.

I mostly work on (and own) cars without software. Is it common to charge time AND a software fee for an update?

All true, but book rates are only valid for normal usage without unexpected extra's. A scooter that has been standing still for some yrs will not be fixed at book rate for a 5.000 fix.

(safe to assume a Vespa 125cc for 900,- and with only 5.000km is a bunch of yrs old and spend it's life standing still)

400 for a service (Oil, filters etc) doesn't seem that much. And 100 for a tire seems about right.

"Standschaden" is a thing, but they don't mention the typical things related to that (freeing rusted calipers, cleaning carb varnish... fiddling with corroded connectors). I deal with a lot of Strandschaden. (a lot!)

The point was they should be able to tell you what a 5K service costs, and what it includes, up front.
