BE drivers licence for towing the camping trailer

I'm in progress to add "BE kategorie" in my exist A,B,C,D1 driver licence as we are buying camping trailer soon and the total weights will shoot over 3500kg
Anyone have tips how to get BE easiest made, I do not want waste too much money for local Driver Schools if I really don't need to. All help are welcome. I am living in kanton Aargau.

Re: BE drivers licence for towing the camping trailer

It is as simple as 1,2,3:

Step 1: Get a BE learners permit. Note the BE is only added to B, D, C1, and D1. For A there is no AE. For C you would need to do the CE, this includes BE, DE, D1E, and C1E.

Step 2: Practice, practice, practice. For driving on the road, manoevering, and for the exam. Note: The learners permit is not valid abroad.

Step 3: Pass the exam before the learners permit expires (After 24 months).

The tricky part is to know what they test in the exam. For this a driving teacher might help.

You will have to attach end detach the trailer, drive backwards in a curve, park, and know how to properly load the trailer.

The BE trailer for the exam must be at least as height and wide as the towing car. It also must be a closed box (such that you have to use the mirrors). It also must weight at least 800 kg and have a permitted weight of at least 1000 kg.

Re: BE drivers licence for towing the camping trailer

Hi,

Thank you for your prompt response. All what you said make really sense. So it seems that I need to start with learners permit and need to visit in Strassenverkehrsamt Aargau at next week.

I have practiced some years with my old camping trailer already, but just noticed that without valid license. Now it will be time to get proper documents to continue this hoppy with new trailer.

So, as summary it seems that no additional driving school are needed. Maybe for practice the maneuvers but not mandatory. Then just need to find place where to rent the BE class trailer for small own training and the test.

I hope the trailer can be easily found and no German language is needed for this test as I am still quite beginner with my Germany... From experience I know that Strassenverkehsamt can be challenging place...

Re: BE drivers licence for towing the camping trailer

My Swiss license states that I have A,B,D1,BE, and D1E all as of my 16th birthday!

In reality, I only got my car license 9 months later, and my bike license 2 YEARS later!

Re: BE drivers licence for towing the camping trailer

I got today response from local Driving School and price to take the lesson will be 100chf if I use car and trailer from school. That is only for training and then the examination on top of it.

Message from school,

- a lesson will cost 100.-CHF with my car and my trailer. If you have already an own combination the price per lesson will be 80.-CHF.

The exam has two parts:
1. theoretic: about weights, comparison car / trailer by using the registration papers, Connect and disconnect vehicles, Check Trailer safety.
2. practice: to drive precise reverse in different situations, drive perfect in normal traffic
(Commands and conversation during exam will be in german language)

Now my only limiting issue seems to be german language, we will see how to get over that...

I have the BE license and would recommend taking a lesson (or two) as they will explain the fundamentals and you will understand quickly

For this step, is it required to have someone with a BE license sitting beside me while I practice?

Re: BE drivers licence for towing the camping trailer

Hi teemukoo,

I am also thinking to upgrade to a B+E license. Have taken the exam? How did it go?

You were saying:

Was this because you were above the maximum authorized weight limit for the car+trailer, 3500kg ?

In my home country I did an additional training with a driving school to get the "96 code" which allows me to drive a pair of car and trailer of up to 4250kg. This code seems to be valid all over EU, but couldn't find anything regarding this code in the swiss regulations.

I will soon exchange my foreign drivers licence to the swiss one and see if I get to keep this extra code or not. If not, I will have to get the B+E in the end. My 2100kg family combi is already limiting me to relatively light trailers, and taking in consideration we are planning to upgrade to some 7-seater 4x4 in the future (at least 2350kg), a B+E is going to be a must.

Is there anyone else having / have had the 96 driver licence code? What happened when you switched to a swiss licence?

Re: BE drivers licence for towing the camping trailer

It is called BE, not B+E

Switzerland has no code 96, nor any code which would be similar. If you are lucky you will get BE (make a tick on the relevant box). Otherwise you will have to do the BE exam like back at home.

Re: BE drivers licence for towing the camping trailer

I'm going through the B96 process right now. I was told that B96 does not qualify me for BE in Switzerland; however, they said to bring in some transcript of records and B96 description and they would consider some alternative. So next month I'm hoping to accumulate my paperwork and submit my case. I'm hoping that they will give me BE with a note of 4.250kg limit which will serve my purpose.

On the related note - so if I apply for a learning permit - do I then have 2 years to pass the test while I'm allowed to drive a combination of vehicles above 3.500kg? Does a BE holder have to sit next to me?

If if fail the BE test - will they strip me off my B?

Re: BE drivers licence for towing the camping trailer

Also - does anybody know if the learner license is valid outside of Switzerland? I need to tow a boat occasionally so if I get away with BE learner license for 2 years then it temporarily serves the purpose for me.

The only thing you would need to do in Switzerland is a practical exam. After that full BE. Most if not nearly all of what you have do know should be though in your B96 course.

No, there is normally no such risk. Except you do really, really, really bad and should honestly not be on the road behind the steering wheel of a motorized vehicle for the safety of all others.

Re: BE drivers licence for towing the camping trailer

Hi guys, I am in the same B96 european category and need to change my license to a BE swiss one, because I have a caravan, and total weight car+caravan > 3500kg.
They told me at the Strassenverkehrsamt that I only need to take the practical exam to gain the full BE driving permit.
My question to you guys is, can any of you who took the practical exam tell me what the exam was like? I don't know what to expect. What did they make you do?

Re: BE drivers licence for towing the camping trailer

Hi mihaibica,

I am also curios how the exam is. In 2019 when I exchanged my driving license to the swiss one, the strassenverkehrsamt (SG) stripped my B96 category to regular B. Since I did not need to drive any big trailer/camper and since I was concerned about communication in German during the exam, I did not pursue with getting the BE category.

In the last months I thought again about the BE exam. My German knowledge has improved and my family got bigger and could use a camper for vacations.

Could you please share your experience with the exam if/when you take it?
