IT IS A CANNTONAL MATTER, so what is allowed in Vaud may or maynot be allowed in Valais.

Just to give you one very simple example of peculiarity that i know, wheel nuts in canotn of Bern need to have 7 full screw turns before they are legal, in other cantons it can be only 5......

Who checks : probably nobody..........until there is an accident.
Really, you're going to SHOUT?

I KNOW IT'S CANTONAL! I CAN BOTH POST HERE AND FOLLOW UP WITH THE SCN AT THE SAME TIME. I KNOW I'M MALE, BUT I AM ACTUALLY CAPABLE OF DOING MORE THAN ONE THING AT A TIME, AND ALSO OF MAKING MY MIND UP WHAT TO DO ONCE I'VE COLLECTED INFORMATION. PLEASE STOP YELLING!

Now, back to my question, has anyone actually done this before that might want to share hints and tips? If you're just going to again tell me to go to the SCN, please post on another thread, you might think the information you're giving me is useful, but it's not, since it was always something I was going to do, but I wanted to put together some plans ahead of going to see them.

Re: Camper conversions

Dear jonp,
I notice this thread is about a year old. I am just moving to Switzerland, I converted a van to a campervan in the UK and was looking to do the same to a Swiss van. Did you manage to do a conversion? Did you come across any registration or other hassles? Any help / advice gratefully received. Thanks Greg fergy

Hello.

I live in Zürich and I'm also planning to make a camper.
This week I will go to traffic to ask for rules. we can share what they tell us and advice.

Re: Camper conversions

Hello Claudio,

Did you get any news from the Zurich authorities? I have built a van in the UK and would be interested in doing something similar in Switzerland.

Re: Camper conversions

In the case of the OP, I'd have just bought a Marco Polo. Or a Marco Polo Activity (that's the one without the kitchen, IIRC).

I have a co-worker who bought a "naked" Mercedes Sprinter (a plain vanilla delivery van) and had it converter to a mobile home by a specialist company in Germany.

That was probably a six-figure job, though.

These days camper-vans are probably in very high demand.

You can find the rules here:
https://asa.ch/it/biblioteca-online/direttive/
https://asa.ch/it/biblioteca-online/promemoria/

The bare standards is the same for all cantons. If you meet these you will pass the inspection. In some cantons you might get away with a bit more.

Re: Camper conversions

Hi, I'm based in Zurich, and on with a basic conversion at the moment.

When I asked about van modifications/conversion, I was told... If it doesn't affect the structure, you can do almost what you want internally, just watch the weight.
I've asked mechanics, insurance companies, the guys who do the inspection, and at the road traffic office when it was registered.
My insurance guy also says all the internals are covered at no extra cost if they are informed what's been done.
Don't know about a gas installation, but most countries expect a safety certificate

I'm no expert, and only repeating the information I received.
