Help me choose new tires, please !

I need to buy new summer tires. I have been looking online. However, I'm finding tires from 80-400f! WTH?!

I've asked my entourage but they can not come up with a consensus and they are not giving me facts on which to base my decision. Only options.

What are these Y, W, etc letters and are they important ?
Does the tire decibel rating matter if it's between 68 and 71? Can this small difference be noticed?

I'd like to spend as little as possible without being dangerous. Are brand name tires really better?

Help!

Re: Help me choose new tires, please !

Summer tires in February?

Is your boyfiend anxious to try out his new toy?

Size, vehicle?

The letters have to do with speed ratings, you must use tires with a speed rating equal or greater than the official top speed of you vehicle.

For example, one of my bikes has a declared top speed of 270, so I MUST use tires rated for that, even if it's illegal to do more than 120.

The decibel scale is logarithmic in nature.

70dB is twice as loud as 60dB

3dB difference could possibly noticeable but other factors such as the general noise of the car engine, wind noise etc would make a difference too so if you have a noisy car, I wouldn't worry too much.

I suspect that tyre noise will become more of a factor as the move to electric cars becomes greater.

I need to get them ordered and ready before I can put them on. Plus I'm being optimistic that the summer is just around the corner !!

How would I know the top speed of the car?

The summer tires on now are 255/35/19.

Great! So I think that is one factor I can ignore!
Thank you.

Even if I did go on the autobahn I doubt that I would get it to go at the top speed!!

eTA: top speed is 224 km.
(That was easy! )

Perhaps, but the actual top speed is irrelevant, it is the declared top speed that matters.

No, it is twice as powerful.

Whether it is twice as loud is purely subjective.

Re: Help me choose new tires, please !

https://www.adac.de/infotestrat/test...n/default.aspx read the tests results, pick the one you want.
Then just search online for the vest deal.
Letters are important as is everything else otherwise you are getting into potential trouble and might fail the Swiss control.

Tyres are what connect your car to the road. You don‘t have to buy the CHF 400 ones, but don‘t buy some no name ditch finders. Midrange brands e.g. Kumho, Vredstein are fine.

Thank you!! I don't know any of these brands. That was part of my question. Someone told me about a South Korea brand which I can't remember the name begins with an N. ) But they seemed very inexpensive.

I want a good safe tire without necessarily having to buy top of the line if there are mid range options that are good quality.

255/35/19 seem a bit large for that car, especially for the front.

Are you sure?
