Registering my Swiss Mercedes 2008 in France ?

Here's the situation... my partner and I are Canadian expats who have been here in the Zurich area for the last 8 years. We are returning to Canada in late July, but want to take my car in June to France and register it there as we have friends with a summer house that we will stay at every year forthcoming for part of the summer. Thought it might be nice not to have the worry of selling my car here, plus we would have the benefit of not needing to rent a car each summer at our friends'. Have already spoken to the French insurance company and they are happy to insure for the low-km rate per year, provided all the re-registering process is done in France.

If I understand the reading I have done so far, it's all going to be a bit of a bureaucratic hassle...perhaps somewhat costly as well...but after all that, we still can not do it I think as we are only visitors to France each summer and do NOT own property, therefore we cannot really provide the documentation of proof of French ADDRESS.

If anyone has any insights into this situation, I would appreciate it.
Thank you!

Re: Registering my Swiss Mercedes 2008 in France ?

How are you going to register it if you don't have a French address?

Also, the importation process will be a pain, and not cheap.

11 yr old car..

I'd say renting for 2 months a year is so much easier and perhaps cheaper than bringing the car over, you can rent a Peugeot 2008 for roughly 1.000 Chf a month in France and that is not even the cheapest rental solution.

Would "selling" the car to your friend and letting him import it be less of a hassle? You'll visit them every year, so I assume you're close enough to pull this off.

No.

It's an 11 year old car, importing is going to cost a lot, probably more than it's worth.

This is the better option... but maybe the OP wants to "keep" his car for some reason or another.

For the price of the import they can rent a car for a nice period, now add the expected costs of insurance, tax, mandatory checks and maintenance/repairs over the years, and even add what the car would bring for money when simply sold here, that would all be money they could spend on rentals also insuring they don't drive an "old" car. And best of all, no hassle, no problems.

I have a 27 year old motorcycle that I keep in Trieste, but I keep it with Swiss plates to avoid the bureaucracy and costs of importing and registering it in Italy.
