Would you ever buy a M3 without a box living in Geneva?

I'm facing this choice now, i need to change the car and i don't really know if i can shift to an EV or i have to stick with a gas one.

Well, the real question is: can you charge where you park?

If that is no, I'd say it's very difficult. You aren't supposed to supercharge the car every time you empty it. That's going to murder the battery

That's not really true at all. It would only murder it if you took it to 100% each time (and left it at 100% without driving it each time).

I charge almost exclusively by supercharging, up to 90%, as recommended by Tesla themselves.

can you choose from the app the maximum charge? At 90% in this case the power output would be stopped?

Yes, you can set the max charge in app and in the car.

If your „box“ has a domestic 220v power socket, you can put on about 11kms per hour when connected. Tesla recommend you leave the car connected when garaged each night and load to 80-90%. I set to 85% which gives a 400kms range and set the charge time to off-peak (not a great saving any more with EKZ)...

Well, these people have large investments in the oil and gas sector.
They want to milk those until the very last possible moment.

Who could blame them?

sorry that whole essay was a load of twoddle

oil and gas companies couldn't give a toss about electric cars, they'll just sell a hell of a lot more oil and gas to power stations instead, in fact it would reduce their costs, BP not having to worry about petrol stations and moving the stuff around.

Other car companies? well toyota produce around 30,000 cars per day, tesla around 1000, they ain't running scared lol, if they really wanted to they could go to all the expense of producing a tesla killer, but why bother? they are making a tonne of money using all their tried, tested and cheap tech, along with all their dealers making money on servicing and repairs, right now tesla is a mildly annoying upstart that doesn't follow any of the 'normal' rules and regulations, you know, screw proper testing just roll it out, call it 'auto pilot' no one will get that confused with actually being an auto pilot.

And of course the big boys all make money, tesla hemorrhage it.

I always got the feeling elon was hoping one of the big guys would come along and offer him a few billion for the company and he'd be off.

Also worth checking the price of cobalt its been in freefall recently which is a bit odd for something that's needed for EV batteries

Tesla's batteries only contain about 2.7 or so percent of cobalt these days.
Others have sometimes five to ten times as much.

As Tim Cook once said:

Quote:
It’s good to question the accuracy of any kind of rumour about those [order cut] plans” Cook argued. “And even if a particular data point was factual, it would be impossible to interpret what it means for our overall business. The supply chain is very complex … there’s an inordinate long list of things which would make a single data point not telling for what’s going on.

More of a PR issue though I think. Tesla is symbolic of a shift away from fossil fuels, not just in the automotive sector, but also the energy sector. Fossil fuel companies know that they are fighting a losing battle at the moment and are trying their damnedest to discredit alternative energy sources.

Capitalism at its finest.

unless someone is building a shed load of nuclear power stations we don't know about then fossil fuels are quite safe

I'm not sure about that.

Tesla symbolizes a change of energy source but there are also other moving factors in the market like car sharing, pay per use etc that are much more disruptive for the entire car market, as a car would not be personalized but become a commodity.

And while politics is all about the environment, there are more models from BMW M, Audi S and Mercedes AMG than ever. Strange discrepancy.

Fully agree (hope!) that we'll move towards a shared transport solution, makes a lot of sense, although there will be a lot of resistance from people (and companies!) who want their own vehicle for their own use only.

We aren't talking about disrupting the car industry though, but the energy industry. If clean electric energy was the most profitable way for energy companies to distribute power, they'd drop oil in an instant (or go bust!).

BB2, you may be missing something very obvious. Solar. For the first time in 2017, the new installed capacity globally for solar overtook new installed capacity for gas/coal/nuclear combined. Link here. And the divergence is only increasing since then. Ofcourse, it will be a long time before actual installed capacity is threatened.

Talking to Oil&Gas execs, Auto execs and Engineering execs who are living through this and totally want to avoid being Kodak'd, it does not look to me "all calm on the eastern front".

Only in winter - I use my personal bi-pedaled self-propulsion vehicle during dry months ;-)

The advantage of shared vehicles in the future would be they could much more efficiently deliver people point to point, which buses and trams obviously can't. They would also be an invaluable aid to rural communities not served by public transport.

You city boys eh, never giving a moments thought to the real, salt of the earth countryside inhabitants.
