Re: Tesla Fan Boy Thread

I am moving from US to Swiss July/August and looking to bring my 2018 Model3 Long range. I have been advised by many to sell the car and buy one in Swiss because Tesla may not provide warranty coverage and additional challenges. If you have done something similar or if you know of someone who did this can you please share details.

Poor Swedes. Swaziland is no longer an option as the country's now called (Kingdom of) Eswatini, so they're sure to get abused even more.

We started looking at Model X last month to replace our hybrid, then the news of the BMW ix

This is what I was waiting for, finally - ticks the boxes I hoped for

It doesn't have a frunk. In fact, it seems you can't even open the bonnet.

Well, at least you can have that Bugatti Veyron feeling without having to pay millions.

Looks like BMW-fanbois are at least as gullible as Tesla-fanbois ;-)

I think it's actually quite attractive overall. For me though, it's the combination of getting the range, styling and confidence that the level of quality from the manufacturer can be relied upon

I've driven 3 of the Tesla models and remain unconvinced, sight unseen I am already convinced with the iX - I read Toyota (finally) will be releasing several models too so I see the inevitable increase of options/competition for Tesla which will be a positive for the consumer longterm

Moreover, it should likely force Tesla to improve their quality control - they are no longer pioneers, albeit leaders, in this technology

Great radiator grill. What‘s that for actually??

The upcoming BMW iX will feature a grille whose “role has turned digital,” creating potentially new considerations for the common collision repair surface.

BMW doesn’t need a grille to cool the iX’s fully electric powertrain, and it repurposed the “completely closed off” surface as an “intelligence panel,” the OEM wrote in a Nov. 11 news release.

“Camera technology, radar functions and other sensors are integrated seamlessly into the grille behind a transparent surface,” BMW wrote. Mechanisms to clean and heat the sensors sit in the front of the grille.

That’s noteworthy enough for collision repair. But BMW’s just getting started. This is George Jetson’s grille.

“In order to guarantee the greatest possible precision when using the radar sensor mounted behind the kidney grille, a nanoscale vacuum-based coating process is employed in its manufacture,” BMW wrote. “Here, the two-color finish and visible 3D effect are produced by vaporization using laser technology and by a plasma-fired application technique in a vacuum. A combination of the laser-based method developed specially for production of the kidney grille on the iX and a precisely defined combination of material and layer thickness optimize radar performance.”

Oh, and the grille can also heal itself if you leave it alone for a while.

“An additional polyurethane coating reduces the kidney grille’s susceptibility to damage,” BMW wrote. “The self-healing effect of its surface can repair minor scratches, for example – within 24 hours at room temperature or through a five-minute supply of warm air.”

BMW called the grille an example of “shy tech,” features incorporated into the vehicle subtly enough that they go unnoticed until you need to use them.

It said other body “shy tech” examples included the flush door handles, distance sensors within front and rear black body edging, and a camera within the black ring of the tailgate’s BWM logo. “The camera lens is cleaned automatically by a water spray system which extends from behind the surface of the roundel,” BMW wrote.

Re: Tesla Fan Boy Thread

The problems with Tesla's QC probably have multiple sources.

My guess is it's a combination of (lack of) skill of the workers, fluctuations, strain (they run 3 shifts in Fremont, AFAIK) and of course the prioritization of throughput over quality.

By all accounts, the cars are getting better. But getting from 98.5% to 99% is very hard.

Additionally, the ships usually arrive in Europe usually in such a way, that it's towards the end of the quarter and that leaves the staff at the service/deliver centers very, very little time for giving the cars a one-over (or two-over...).

The factory in Grünheide should allow for more relaxed deliver-schedules and thus more time to get the cars in better shape to customers.

The iX is pretty hideous nevertheless, the grille as described looks like a useless gimmick, a lame excuse for a design-element that has long outlived its usefulness and merely exists as a way to convey an aura of aggressiveness and power that in itself has come out of style a while ago, unnoticed by both designers and buyers of BMW cars it seems.

Almost 400 different passenger car models available on CH today. It's almost like car manufacturers know a thing or two about market segmentation.

That's the thing. The largest sales are coming from Asia, so European taste might not be served as a priority.
Asians tend to love big, aggressive-looking cars (with small eyes) - now they're being served one. I'd say let them have it.

If it has to be a German EV or a hybrid, I'd rather get a Merc, the EQC is not that much more expensive to a Model X, but definitely better quality.
It's the cheaper segment which is tricky as there seems to be not a lot of models in the <50k segment with affordable EV range.

the Model S Plaid+ has been cancelled. Really a pity as the specs are spectacular, or were they maybe a bit too optimistic?

Something to be concerned about. Especially if you are waiting on a new 3.

Yes dropping radar and some of radar’s safety features seems an odd move. Apparently „Tesla Vision“ will be better and eventually replace all radar safety features, though it does require full beam at night to see where it‘s going with FSD (Full Self Driving).

For next Tesla (German made Model Y) I will save and not specific FSD. I don‘t see it ever working on Swiss/most European traffic situations…

Non-US delivered Teslas will continue to use radar for the foreseeable future.

More concerning is the fact that LR Model 3 delivery times slipped to November.

If you need a LR in August - better get one now from inventory....
