Planning on a new car? Might want to wait

EU is planning to make 11 car safety feature mandatory in 2021.

https://www.theweek.co.uk/93687/eu-l...tory-from-2021

So those now extra cost safety features will be standardized.

However, on the other hand I don't know if I want my car to be forcing me to do the exact speed limit and telling me to go back to bed on my morning commute.

The ones which do an emergency braking when you open a door are a right PITA when you're trying to put the car on a ramp or lift to service it.

Better to NOT wait so you don't get these unwanted features!

Way I see it there should be some discounts next year to clear out the stock before 2021. Maybe time to shop

One of the items in the list is this:
Head impact zone enlargement for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as safety glass

What does that even mean?

The zone that has to be tested/designed to lower damage to pedestrians and cyclists on impact will be enlarged. Now it includes only part of the bonnet.

But in post-Brexit Britain, we can still race around like lunatics.

Pretty sweet list of features.
If that AEB stops tail gateing will really get up the noses of our hosts.

And fully online so the car will automatically inform the police if you are speeding?

They already have plans so cars can't overspeed anymore..

They sure know how to make driving a car as boring as can be.

I really wonder how some of that stuff is going to fit into a small car.

That and the price-increase because of electrification is going to kill the cheap, small car.

It will be like 1909 again - the rich driving in (then mostly autonomous) cars and the poor in public transport, ride-shares and horse-carriages.

.
Most of the requirements just need a small front and a rear camera fitted - and the rest is software -which most manufacturers already have for their higher-end models.

So I'll have to use a fishing rod to dangle a '120' sign in front of the forward facing camera if I want to overtake ?

Hopefully there'll be an option somewhere in the setup menu to change over to miles....

Camera's ain't good for emergency braking, you'll need radar/lidar for this, and the car needs equipment to be able to actually increase the pressure on the brakes suddenly, and besides that it needs a system where pressure is divided equally to avoid going into weird directions (almost always present already on cars tho).

Event (accident) data recorder demands extra hardware, as does Drowsiness and attention detection and same goes for facilitation of installation of an alcohol interlock.

Now lets say 1.500,- per car, which ain't a lot on a Mercedes 350, but people who like to drive smaller cheaper cars like an Up will see a significant increase which easily can go over 10%.

(just my opinion)

t would allow a few seconds of going faster for situations and overtaking, just to hope the guy next to you does not step on the gas also, since you just can't speed up anymore...

I just don't like the idea of losing full control of the car, and have worked to long with automatisations to trust my life to a bunch of sensors and software.

The price will keep dropping, like all tech.
Most people never cough up and buy the car outright nowadays, so the cost is spread out somewhat over a few years.

This move was inevitable really. People cannot be trusted to drive responsibly, despite the driving test being made more comprehensive.

Obviously there are dozens of scenarios where no amount of tech will help, but it’s a step in the right direction, IMO.

Most cars use a combination of camera and radar. Radar to detect the object and the camera, and object recognition software, to work out what the object is.

The drowsiness monitoring can also be done with the forward camera by lane monitoring.

Sure - it will all add to the cost of the vehicle but I never wrote that it wouldn't.

Re: Planning on a new car? Might want to wait

my car has a speed assistance thing in the sense that it reads signs and you can set it to beep if you're above the speed limit by X.

But it's a stupid thing because it fails to read the signs in so many places, so the option is disabled by default.

I don't think it makes sense to make it a compulsory feature at this point, it just increases the price.
