Hired cars can be subject to a short term allowance, and are not excepted by default.

Also have you really never heard of the EU VAT Area?
The Swiss rules are here: https://www.ezv.admin.ch/ezv/en/home...itzerland.html

I have driven Swiss-registered rental cars hired at GVA and also one time a French-registered rental car from GVA (but I had to buy a motorway medallion) among Switzerland, Italy and France without trouble, even when checked by customs.

I am about to get a Swiss licence (I am effectively dual resident and will manage to keep my UK licence; I have a U.S. one and an old French one I could exchange). But I will be no longer able to drive my UK-registered car to Switzerland.

One curiosity over the years: No EU-registered car can be driven anywhere in the EU unless it has been taxed. Switzerland allows such cars exceptionally and temporarily to be driven in Switzerland. A UK car can be driven untaxed from the UK port of entry to a pre-arranged MOT inspection anywhere in Britain; then (assuming it's still insured) you can immediately tax it and drive it away. But driving through France you'd either have to get Customs plates or hire a driver with trade plates or else ship the car on a lorry. So I was told. Chances of getting caught are slim, I suppose, unless there's a crash.
