If the car in front of you is only 124feet away, then, yes the 10 feet less of breaking distance is pretty important ....

You can be cheap on a lot of things, but being cheap on tires is silly, they are not expensive, they are the only things in contact with the road and they make the difference between walking away from an accident or going in a wooden box or pushing a wheelchair.

If you want to take the risk of running winter tires in the summer, then fine go ahead, but there are consequences to your actions, some which can be quite serious.

I was waiting for this one 'oh but when the last 10 feet makes you hit the car'.... first answer my 2 year old winter tires versus 5 year old summer tires question please. And the one about 5 year versus 2 year old winter tires in the winter.
Plus your 'math' is wrong, either 2 sets of tires every 6 years or 1 set every 3 years costs the same.

Oh, and I remembered, I once put a car on winter tires through the MFK during high summer, there was no comment on this.

Also, why do motorcycles have soft compound tires in summer when they apparently are bad ?
I think you'll find the winter tyre grip issue is more the tread pattern rather than the compound.

Such as?

All we have seen so far is some youtube blogger or ‘influencer’ in an unscientific test.
People would be better off driving properly/defensively than relying on tyres to save them.

Caveat - in the wet, tyres do make a huge difference

How do 2 year old winter tires compare to 5 year old summer tires ?

It's a rhetorical question and impossible to answer without a lot more information !!

I have always said summer/winter tires don't cost anything or very little as they also last twice as long !

There is nothing preventing you passing an MFK with whichever tires you wish, providing they are in a condition that is in compliance with the minimum set by law or the cantonal authorities. In view their is no set date when certain tires need to be mounted, how could their be any obligation ?

However if you have an accident and you are not "properly equipped" then you will be found at fault. How you define "properly equipped" is very arbitary and open to interpretation by a third party. The Police have only an interest to find a faultive party to blame, close the incident and hopefully raise a bit of money via a fine

A set of tires for a VW Polo cost about Chf 240.--, brand new, winter or summer, for a large powerful Mercedes about Chf 900.--

Why dick around for such small money ?

the difference is +/- 10% so not that much. Push the brake pedal 1/10th of a second later and you have more of a difference. Having a wider tyre can easily compensate that 10% and also helps in maintaining grip in corners. Just make sure you always have enough thread and only buy premium tyres (Michelin, Conti, Goodyear, Nokian)

Following that principle, we should all change tyres every 1000km to intact thread and only buy the very very best tyre and so on. There is always a compromise.

Re: Are you all changing tires yet?!

Jeez this is getting silly now! I honestly thought that this would be a serious topic and not go off and become a summer vs winter tire debate. I'm shocked that people are questioning changing tires. This is exactly the type of debate I see all the time on the Audi forums, albeit it the opposite. In the UK the big debate is whether one should change to winter tires or not. Shocked to find out that some expats think the opposite here in Switzerland.

Anyone questioning the source of the video I posted, get a life! You are just trying to justify your ridiculous decisions. Any google search will pull up various websites with proper research. I posted that video as it was the 1st I could find, not as conclusive research.

Anyway, each to their own i guess. The main conclusion has to be that we should optimise the grip for the conditions we drive in, hence why we change tires to winter compounds.

Question: iv only just joined this forum but trying to figure out what the "thanks" button actually serves for?! people are thanking a guy for his post on using winter tires throughout the summer! He's hardly Gandi!

Re: Are you all changing tires yet?!

I drove Toyota Camry on all-season tires for 8 years in New England where snow storms are notorious. I drove my car to neighboring states to ski, driving on snow-covered roads. I never needed Winter tires or studded tires or chains. It is all about driving defensively in adverse conditions and knowing how to right the car if it skids.
Anyway , the last time I saw snow on the ground around Basel was never, so I don't need Winter tires on a front wheel drive car.

It's about temperature much more than snow.

No, you need correct tires with a minimum of tread, anything less is just plain stupid

Re: Are you all changing tires yet?!

In New England, state troopers (highway police) call a day after snowstorm an "Audi time". Guess why?
If anyone bothered to do data analysis on this winter tire gimmick we might have found out that winter tires + all wheel drive creates overconfidence that leads to more accidents not less.

My gut feeling is that the type of tire provides minute margin of safety that is easily negated by overconfidence such tires impart on a driver, while the style of driving accounts for the most of your chances to survive on the road in adverse cond..

Season tires appear to me nothing more than a marketing ploy otherwise insurance companies around the World would make it mandatory (which is not even a case in CH).

I dont understand the anger.

My next door neighbour's child, my God daughter, was killed in a road accident by a twat who thought using summer tyres in bad winter conditions was an excellent idea;: she was 7 years old and lost her life for the sake of about Chf 300.-- capital outlay

It was somebody with little or no experience of alpine driving conditions in the winter, just to stupid to follow common sense.

You understand now ?
