all-season may still make you liable for accidents in the winter as they are not winter tires....
Some aren't, others are.

How about heels on ice and some musical number, while we are at it? (with jazz hands, pls!)

Anyways, I grew up with people riding their tyres to the rims..they probably appreciated the noise/bumps not giving a microsleep any chance.

Safer then? We did roll off a hill once, but it was due to missing road signs.
If you can find heels that'll fit me, I can find the ice. Then a go at mama's stew?

Re: Are you all changing tires yet?!

In other news, I'm off to hike up Matterhorn in flipflops. It's snowy & icy but hey, I'm a great walker! Grip doesn't matter, neither does equipping myself well for the conditions! Sure, boots or spikes would give me better grip and allow me greater stability and confidence when walking, but I'm a great walker, never slipped, so ill be fine!!

Depends on your shoe size! And can we do some donuts on ice? Mama's stew? Ok. Hot toddy 1st. As long as my students don't see me.

People, change your tyres and brace yourselves.

If you go to a certain large car dealer in Pratteln, Basel they tell you winter tires are absolutely not needed and a complete waste of time and money.

Name and shame, so we can avoid them. They're talking blocks.

Rule of thumb: O to O /October till Ostern: Winter tires. Ostern to October : Summer tires.

Re: Are you all changing tires yet?!

My first Winter in Basel I got myself Goodyear Winter tires upon insistence of my wife. (women always overprotective).
So I drove around on them for a few weeks and then I needed to go to one ski resort near Zurich. That place is accessible by a mountain road. When I entered the twisty road my Winter tires packed in with snow and my car lost traction and the front started to slide without control. On the road with no guardrails that was dangerous. So I looked at what locals are doing and realized they were all driving on chains that day. Sweet! My Winter tires were perfectly fine on the dry highway and perfectly useless in the snow.
Never again.

So, if you go scuba diving, and you see a fish, that means that scuba tanks and regulators are a scam?

I have to ask: Does it hurt to think this way?

Try reading post 40 again, maybe if you read slowly and take a bit of time to comprehend, you may just understand why i have such anger.

It was because of an arrogant person, not from Switzerland that my 7 year old god child lost her life as the person decided he knew best and didn't invest a little money is proper equipment.

By the way he went down for just under 5 years for homicide involontaire.....

That's how they work.

Do you know what a snowman is? Have you ever noticed that the snow sticks together. That's one way how winter tyres work. The snow gets trapped in the especially designed grooves and adheres to the snow on the road.

Of course there are going to be times when conditions are such that tyres alone are not enough and chains are needed too.

That's why you should carry chains as well if you are in the mountains in winter.

Good luck to you with you snowman theory.

Come on, go look at a winter tyre next to a summer tyre. The summer tyres still has the wide tread for water evacuation between the blocks. Winter tyres have the wide, and also the smaller hairline ones on the blocks. The smaller ones hold a tiny bit of water which allows snow to adhere to the tyre.

After being in snow with a winter tyre you'll see snow all around the tyre. A summer tyre will have very little snow on it. Snow grips to snow and therefore the winter tyre has better grip in the snow. But the little hairline tread on the blocks means they wear faster, and have less grip in the dry.

I don't know why I'm explaining this.

I don't really want to put them on blast as apart from that they were quite reasonable. Even fixing an issue after I left the dealer with the car, and then reported it the following day. In the UK, in my experience, you're as good as dead when you leave the garage with the car.

but really the dealer was telling me I didn't need to bother with winter tires and I should just stick with summer all year round. Luckily I've been in Switzerland for a few years now so I knew to take what he said with a pinch of salt.

Suffice it to say it was a very popular dealer that specialises in VW, Audi, Skoda, etc.
