Maaaaan, that is the most out-out there harebrained theory I have ever heard.
Good luck to you with you snowman theory.
I had a practical example of that last month - I had to drive out of an underground garage in Davos where our car had been parked for a few days. The garage was dry but the ramp was steep and covered in snow.

I tried to drive out but after a couple of metres, the front wheels slipped and couldn't gain traction. The car started sliding towards the wall too.

My wife said I needed the chains but instead I put the handbrake on, waited a moment or two and then drove up the ramp as if it was as dry as a summer road.

The problem was that the tyres needed some snow in the tread slots to grip to the snow on the ramp.

Happily I see you've been banned in the interim. However assuming you can still read in here:

Nothing grips snow like snow. So, in the case of compact snow, winter tyres fill their tread grooves with snow and this grips the snow on the road.

but really the dealer was telling me I didn't need to bother with winter tires and I should just stick with summer all year round. Luckily I've been in Switzerland for a few years now so I knew to take what he said with a pinch of salt.

Suffice it to say it was a very popular dealer that specialises in VW, Audi, Skoda, etc.

Did they sell you the wheel demagnetisation?

It's perfectly possible in the Basel/Pratteln low lands to go a winter without *needing* winter tyres. I didn't put winters on this year but then I'm wreckless apparently (set that up for you).

Re: Are you all changing tires yet?!

I have been called to an appointment for MFK on the 15th of April. Coincidentally, I also need to make an appointment for the regular car service i.e. oil and filter change, brake fluid replacement. I went to ATU and they discovered, which I have completely overlooked when changing to the winters tyres last year, that my directional tyres (rear-wheel ones) were swapped. The front ones were correctly positioned with direction of wheels rotation. Therefore I’m gonna change to the summers on the weekend prior to the MFK.

One thing, I have got a basic car insurance that doesn’t cover the wind screen replacement. Incidentally, just about a year ago I got a little stone chip in the windscreen which unfortunately happened within the driver’s visibility area. The glass spot repair most likely won’t be accepted by MFK. No chance, I was advised by few independent car glass garages and should have it replaced. I went to Germany and the cheapest place seemed to be https://martins-automobile.de which quoted me EUR580 gross or EUR490 net after the tax deduction. That was the cheapest by far place that I could find compared to hefty Swiss prices around CHF1000 without possible insurance claim. It’s gonna be a costly month of April car wise

But at least I can put new wheels on free of charge and this time make damn sure that the arrows point in right direction of rotation ...

I believe you can't get the VAT back once the parts have been fixed to the car. Which would be the case here.

You get the 19% tax back which I was told 580-470=EUR110 but you also should pay Swiss VAT 7.7%.

No, German VAT on tyres is refundable, even if they're mounted on the car. Don't ask me why. I know that VAT on the liquids (oil, etc.) involved in a car service is not refundable.

Probably because the tyres are easy to check if they choose to verify them whereas the liquids arenít.

You get 16% back, not 19%.

580/1.19=487.40, so 92.60. (19% of 487.40, 16% of 580)

Whereas in Italy everything must be in a box with a statement that includes the weight!

BTDT many times over the past 30 years, once having to deal with a customs guy who had a hard time believing that one item cost as much as it did!

Wrong. Expect a fine and a reduction of the amount the insurance pays.

AFAIK glass damages are covered by Teilkasko by all insurers. Unless you have the mandatory 3rd party liablility insurance only you should have been fine. Not anymore though as you had it repaired without the insurern's consent.

Why not just swap the left rear with the right rear, problem solved.

I would presume by 'basic' insurance, he means 3rd party only.

That’s not an issue. I will change to summers anyway.

Glass is an issue as I have got only the 3rd party liability insurance for my old car. Should have changed it to Teilcasco beforehand but the windscreen has never bothered me until here comes the requirement for an MFK and it won’t pass I was told by auto glass experts.

Btw, a new VAT tables say:

I called today to make an appointment to change from my winter to summer tires, wanting to get it done in the next few weeks.

First available appointment: End of July.
