Private Car Hire

This may be a long shot, but I was wondering if anyone around Zurich would have car I could sometimes hire on the weekends? I have just sold my car (quicker than expected) but would still need a car for the next few weekends. Mobility and Sharoo are not really great options for me as I would need it for a round trip of 300-400km to Germany.

I could do regular car hire, but I don't have a credit card which makes it almost impossible. Every place I have called also seems to require the credit card holder to be the driver.

I have have insurance from Basler for 'driving a car which is not mine'. I have never had an accident.

So if anyone has got a car they aren't using or don't need on the weekends (could be fri-sat or sat-sun) and would like a to make some extra cash with it please send me a private message.

Thank you!

Re: Private Car Hire

You seriously expect someone to give a random person of the internet the keys to their car and let you drive off with it for a few days? I can see the advantage from your side - no hot wiring needed, a few days lead time before it is reported stolen and if you play your cards right they might even give you the log book since you are after all leaving the country.

Go get yourself a credit card like everything other adult and sort yourself out.

Re: Private Car Hire

Please no need to get nasty or rude, I said this is probably a long shot. I would of course sign an official contract and pay for the use, I have proof of address here, permit, a job... I am not simply expecting a stranger to hand me keys. I think it's a bit unecessary to get a credit card just for a few weekends for car hire, plus the application process would most likely take longer than I need the car for. I have never ran into problems with just having a debit card before this. There are lots people asking to borrow/exchange things so thought I would give it a chance.

Thank you for the Sharely tip, will have a look.

Get a Revolut pre-paid card, takes a couple of days to get a physical card.

Save yourself the look, noticed the put the car in platform of their own, and you already said Sharoo is not a solution.

Re: Private Car Hire

Yes Sharoo is good for short distances but they charge per km plus daily rental so works out a lot more than normal car hire.

It seems a debit card will do.

This was only one of several google results for
car hire "without credit card"
and
car hire "with debit card".

Re: Private Car Hire

I bet the most of you thought about your Ferraries and Porsches which you would never give to a stranger. But if someone has a CHF 5k car, insured, OP signs contract and puts some deposit - then what's the problem?

P.s. I don't have such a car, so just theory.

Insurance does not cover you handing over the keys of a car and not getting it back... nor renting your car out either.

I don't believe car hire companies will accept it as it's not a credit card.

Aslong as there is enough on the card and they can reserve that amount there should be no difference. It is the same as handing them a pile of cash instead of using a creditcard, some do it, others don't.

Re: Private Car Hire

Lots of car hire companies specifically exclude prepaid credit cards from being accepted.

Having said that, as others have said, it should be possible to find a rental car company that will take a debit card. It's just a case of checking the conditions of each of the major players. A quick google suggests that Sixt might offer this, for example.

The main international rental firms (grouped into ones which are actually different brands of the same operator) are:
Sixt
Avis/Budget
National/Alamo/Enterprise
Europcar/Goldcar/Keddy/InterRent
Dollar/Thrifty/Hertz

You could say this for any hire equipment, people rent out things, even valuable things all the time. Subletting your apartment? They could steal or trash everything you own.

Anyway, I don't really understand what would be in it for me running off with someones 5000 chf car, leaving my apartment, my job, etc... If I wanted to run away I surely would not do it in a stolen car.

Regular car insurance does cover other drivers driving your car, and as I mentioned I have extra cover for driving other peoples cars which covers everything. It doesn't make a difference whether you rent the car or lend it to someone.

The bottom 4 I have called and they only take credit, will have to give Sixt a call today and check with others about a prepaid card.

Re: Private Car Hire

Some will rent with a debit card if you take full insurance with no deductible/excess. Easier just to get a CC.

There is a an "airbnb" version of renting peoples crapboxes but I don't know what it's called and I don't know if it exists in Switzerland.

Re: Private Car Hire

Just get a Migros or Coop credit card. Free to issue so what's the problem with getting one?

Regular car insurance is also invalid when you rent from a private person unless the insurance company is notified (and an additional premium paid).

I guess I will have to but the reason I sold my car is because I am leaving Switzerland soon and just needed a car for a few more weekends. Hence didn't want to apply for a swiss credit card just to hire a car. It seems bizzare to me that I need to apply for a credit card.

Why would regular car insurance be invalid when renting your car privately to a single person? Your car insurance insures the car, not the driver and as I said I have extra insurance from Basler which also protects against premiums going up on the lenders insurance. This has obviously been confirmed with the insurance advisor...

Anyway, I am guessing I wont find a car here

No requirement for a Swiss credit card to rent a car, I lived in CH for almost 20 years. I retained my UK credit cards.

With car insurance you choose the risk to be insured, Social, domestic & business use is standard, renting your car out others & use on race tracks are non standard risks.
