Do Austria and Italy have highway vignettes?

My summer road trips include travel to Austria and Italy. Do these countries require highway vignettes? Where does on get them? Any idea of the cost?

Austria:

https://www.asfinag.at/toll/vignette/

Austrian vignettes can be purchased at convenience stores along the CH-A border, either side of the border.

Italy has no vignettes, but tolls on the autostrada.

Which, depending on where you are going, can be several times the price of a Swiss vignette, for a single day!

the key part of the post was actually "find out yourself" but of course you are aware of that and I should never reacted to your post.

Re: Do Austria and Italy have highway vignettes?

Italy autobahns have tolls where you can pay in cash/credit card

Austri has several vignettes 4 days, weekly, monthly, yearly etc..

Re: Do Austria and Italy have highway vignettes?

Italy can be even worse.

Some highways have cameras that flash you, and if you don't pay the toll on some EXTREMELY complicated website (without actually getting any information that you got flashed) they'll charge like 100x the original tool..

At the moment there is only one motorway with that system and it is located between Milan and Ticino, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

For all the rest of the Italian motorway network it's very difficult to do it wrong, since there are physical barriers forcing people to stop and pay.
The only problem might be picking up the wrong lane:

Lanes approaching barriers are painted in three colors depending on how the corresponding gate works:
  • YELLOW: you pay with Telepass, a transponder connected to your bank account; you have to register in advance to get it. They are usually on the right;
  • BLUE: you pay with Viacard, some type of card that I never used (maybe other cards?);
  • WHITE: you pay with cash, either to a person or to an automated machine that gives you change. They are usually on the left.

Note that yellow Telepass lanes do not require people to actually stop because the transponder works up to 50 km/h (officially 30) therefore some pilots keep some speed until the very last moment. Barriers are signaled in advance, take your time to slow down and pick up the appropriate lane. Use direction indicators ;-)

If you pick up the yellow lane but you don't have a Telepass you SHALL NOT DRIVE IN REVERSE GEAR! There is a button that connects you to an operator, he/she will see you and your licence plate on the cameras and will help you. They can remotely open the gate. It's safer and quicker to talk to them than try to switch gate. You might be told to reach some motorway info point and pay there, your trip will be in the system.

Sad but true... From the Austrian border at Tarvisio/Villach to Venice a one-way trip is 18 Euro, which is a half of the yearly Swiss vignette... if you continue to Rome you end up paying 57 Euro, 150% of the Swiss vignette...
