Problem with bringing a car from Spain

I have tried to find a similar topic but to no avail.
So we moved to Switzerland recently and drove our car from Spain to Switzerland yesterday. We are planning to import it but thought we can deal with the registration of the car later and the process is easy (in theory it is 12 months to make a change).
We consulted the requirements at customs office in Geneva beforehand to avoid any surprises and they gave us the list of documents and told us to bring some document T1 from Spanish Customs (as without this document they wont be able to give us their stamp).
However once we arrived at Spanish customs we were told they will not give us anything and will not let us export as due to Spanish regulation we should de-register the car in Spain first and then with provisional plates that are only valid for 60 days drive to Switzerland. (so it means I do not have 12 months but only 2).

So here is the question – have any of you tried to import the car with the car already in Switzerland? Did you have to drive back to your country to the Customs to get it stamped for export? I just cannot even think of going 1200 km to Spanish border and then another 1200km back to Switzerland just to get a stupid document.
And should I get at least some stamp at Swiss border just to be able to drive it here for some time? (in Geneva they told me they won’t give me any document unless I come with this T1 from Spanish customs).

Re: Problem with bringing a car from Spain

So in summary then, you want to avoid complying with the requirements in Spain to issue a T1 document and you are somehow hoping that there is away around it in Switzerland, despite the fact they have told you they can't do without this T1 document.....

The chances are very high that this will not work out well... If you can't tick all the boxes for the Swiss, then it is unlikely they will move on with this for you.

Re: Problem with bringing a car from Spain

I did the same but from UK and got my "export stamp" if that's what the T1 is, from German customs who didn't ask any questions at all (or look at the car). I just went in and said I need to export my Car (to Switzerland) and they stamped a form. Swiss customs is for declaration/import not for export from the EU.
French customs only directed me to professional importation agents, until one guy told me to do it in Germany.
Worth a try. I don't think it's a circumvention of the rules but you probably are obliged to inform Spain of permanent export at some time.

[edit] This T1 stuff seems to be a red herring. Did you go to Swiss customs or the French? The T1 seems to be some kind of transit document that might only be needed if you use the service of an agent to import the car. I'm pretty sure I smply filled out an "Ausfuhranmeldung 0733" or something very similar, given at the last point when I left the EU.

It's only a days drive! And think of all the chocolate you can smuggle back for the family.

Re: Problem with bringing a car from Spain

Thank you! I do want to comply with Spanish requirements, so if I have to drive back then of course I will (and when it is imported to Switzerland I will follow the process). Once I found out that I had to first de-register the car it was already too late as I could not stay in Spain for another 2 weeks waiting for the appointment. I only wanted to see if there are any other options (legal), so I will give it a try with a German customs first.
