Re: Third speeding ticket in as many months

Not one speeding ticket in the US after most of my adult life driving there, in nearly 9 years en Suisse I have been flashed 5 or 6 times (Never more than 60 CHF) and I am pretty prudent on the road. All of the cases have either been in construction zones where speeds were lowered temporarily or zones going from 120 to 100

Take home lesson for me? Be more alert, particularly with respect to other traffic to signal approaching speed zones or construction areas. Else, it is what it is. I prefer this to the pandemonium you encounter in other countries tbh

I have driven for many years in the UK covering 20000+ miles each year, and never had a ticket. However, after getting a car here in February I have now been snapped for a third time.
Just checking, but you are aware het in CH limits are posted in km/h, not mph ?

I would normally get more speeding tickets in the US in a single year, than 10 here.

In 33 years here, I've only had four or so at CHF 40, and only two above that (CHF 400 or so). I also got one in Italy (EUR 130 or so), and my BIL got me one in Austria (I was in Corsica at the time, but it was only EUR 30, so I paid it)

Re: Third speeding ticket in as many months

How is usage of Waze in Switzerland?

Wouldn't it help to be more aware what is the limit on the road you're on, where to expect the cameras, where to expect the bush ninjas and so on?

Always used it when driving in Europe and never had a single (speeding) ticket, also helps to avoid traffic jams.

Though using it requirez other drivers also to use it (to report bush ninjas, traffic jams, new hidden speed cameras etc)

Any app that warns you about speed cameras is illegal in Switzerland as it would cut into the Cantons' business model.

Re: Third speeding ticket in as many months

Just be happy that you can keep getting them forever without it impacting your ability to drive.

In the UK you’d be one ticket away from a ban and your insurance would be about to go through the roof!

Re: Third speeding ticket in as many months

My sat-nav says a stern "Beware!" whenever I go over the limit and it is very useful. Also I learned that I had to drive the Swiss way i.e. 5kmh under the limit instead of 5kmp over, in the city.

I used to think I was a competent driver, but this has really shook that belief. Perhaps I will just return to public transport.
I believe two main tasks when learning to drive is training the brain to filter out the irrelevant stuff, and building routines and automatisms (for instance you don't think about the details of switching gears with a manual, you just do). At least some of those probably don't work anymore around here - different road signs, driving on the right and all that entails, different building styles so you can no longer tell a school from a McDonalds (jk), perhaps converting km to miles, etc.

Until you've rebuilt those routines and automatisms you'll probably focus on the things in proximity, which hinders planning ahead (you're braking late instead of taking the foot off the gas early, for example). Your driving is likely to suffer.

Perhaps taking a theory course would help? It doesn't cost much, and at least you wouldn't need to think about the meaning of the signs any more. A couple driving lessons with a professional instructor may be useful as well.

At least this way we don't get overly taxed to fund the fuzz with our hard earned Chuffs?
The money goes in the general community coffer not just to the plod. So it also funds the parks, the streets, the school, hospitals, public transport and many things more.

PS: I also have a yearly traffic ticket budget. So far I am CHF 60 over

Re: Third speeding ticket in as many months

Having a car with traffic sign recognition (probably 98% or so accurate, only getting confused occasionally) and setting audible alarms when you beyond the speed limit has been extremely useful for me in avoiding speeding tickets so far.

Yes Zurich is disgusting with its speed cameras. They made 250m profit from it last year. Always on the stupidest places to collect money and not for public safety.

I don't dislike speed cameras as a prevention and punishment measure but the extent to which Zurich has them is simply appalling.

Out of curiosity, did they really make that much money with speed cameras?

Nah, must be less.

Entire German part of Switzerland calculates 285'673'200 Franken for 2019, this is including parking fines, red light, speeding, broken lights etc...

And lets not call it all profit, there is a lot of expenses made to actually get this money in.

All the cameras in VD are connected directly to a central hub that processes the images and creates, prints and mails the fines to the victims. There was a documentary about it on RTS a while back. Now it's setup I guess there a not a lot of expenses (paper, envelopes, stamps...)

Maybe now that the hedge has been cut down. They hide them behind road signs so you only see them at the last moment when it is too late (the one at Urdorf Nord exit road sign just has been moved, the one at the entrance of the Islisberg tunnel, also well hidden, must have brought in loads of money)

So they developed and maintain a system for this, and what does it cost to buy, place and maintain the camera's, or have people going around doing mobile checks. Parking fines for example I see a horde of people roaming the streets daily, must be expensive events they make a profit.

Anyway, I don't care for the actual real numbers, just saying that every rappen that comes in from fines is not 100% profit.

It is not like Sweden where they have signs telling you that a steady speed check is coming up. But this one is pointed towards the bus you also see on the picture. So it does not take you by surprise if you come from behind the bushes
