Third speeding ticket in as many months

I canít believe Iím in this scenario. I feel so ashamed and Iíve been kicking myself the last few days (if we could skip the criticism thatíd be greatly appreciated).

I have driven for many years in the UK covering 20000+ miles each year, and never had a ticket. However, after getting a car here in February I have now been snapped for a third time. I feel awful about it, and this fine (or worse) will really sting.

Two of the three have been where the speed has dropped down and Iíve been travelling to a new location (using sat nav) and just missed the speed change sign. Just trying not to get lost.

My most recent event was where I thought it was 50 but it was a special built up area where 30 was specified. I know Iím going to get at least 250 fine, and perhaps lose my licence.

I used to think I was a competent driver, but this has really shook that belief. Perhaps I will just return to public transport. Has anyone else experienced similar?

Re: Third speeding ticket in as many months

Yes Zurich is disgusting with its speed cameras. They made 250m profit from it last year. Always on the stupidest places to collect money and not for public safety.

I don't dislike speed cameras as a prevention and punishment measure but the extent to which Zurich has them is simply appalling.

Re: Third speeding ticket in as many months

I actually get less here (zero in over 4 yrs) than back at "home"

I also don't miss signs by being to occupied with other things, and already was used to speed cams and mobile controls being everywhere inside/around towns.

Just never ever tell that the police if they ever stop you for speeding....!

Yep, loads of speed traps in Zurich and of course in areas where the speed sign changed It is annoying but after a while you know where they are.

Could it be that you're still getting used to the different visual signscape here? It took me about a year before I acclimatised to signage and such here, but this was before speedtraps were common.

Are you leaving yourself enough time when you set out on a journey? Being time pressed makes you concentrate on not making a wrong turn, which reduces your attention to speed limit changes.

What I find disgusting is that the cantons treat these fines as a revenue source and even plan in their annual budgets:

https://www.rts.ch/info/suisse/42764...d-amendes.html

Makes you wonder whether the judiciary and cops are using the fines as a deterrent or just looking to maximize their receipts.

Still, you all have it under your own control.

I am a big fan of my cars speed limiter. Whenever I get into a complicated area I turn it on. Gives me one less thing to worry about when navigating complex streets. I also do not succumb to peer pressure, I do not follow traffic speed but stick to the signs. If Mr Switzerland behind me in his Porsche thinks I'm going to slow, he should vote for higher limits, not blame Johnny Foreigner with no voting rights just following the law.

Re: Third speeding ticket in as many months

In the UK I never had a fine - even for parking. After 30 years here, I collected 4 speeding fines - all CHF40.- for just over and CHF250.- for 0.6seconds through a red light.

To the OP - don't feel bad. Switzerland makes a fortune from fines. It's nothing personal, just a different driving/policing culture. Just look out of the speed signs!!

Why is that disgusting? It is actually their legal responsibility to budget as completely as possible. It's not their fault that so many people are apparently ready to speed and pay the penalty.

If you read the article, they plan to increase the revenues each year, now how do you do that without some sort of witch hunt?

Re: Third speeding ticket in as many months

In my first year here, I got two fines - one at a higher level, one at the lowest. It's easier to miss limit changes when you're not quite used to the signage.

The 50 in a 30 is a pain, because it's 66% over the limit, and easy to do. When the authorities change the limit on a street from 50 to 30 - miss one sign and *flash* + big fine.

It's just a tax.

Depending on your requirements, it could be the most cost effective way.

Reminds me I should slow down a bit... too long without a fine and the lead foot gets heavier

At least this way we don't get overly taxed to fund the fuzz with our hard earned Chuffs?

Exactly, this is a purely voluntary contribution to the govt, and as such, the speeders should be applauded for their generosity.

Re: Third speeding ticket in as many months

Did I ever tell you all the story about when, silly me, I overtook an unmarked car, speeding up to 120 in the process in an 80 Zone?!

You can imagine the state of my trousers... car starts flashing and chasing, red letter sign "stop" come up in their windscreen....

Do I make a run for it or do I stop? Really not a nice feeling.

Anyways, the two uniformed guys get out, and proceed to lecture me on my velocity... checking my ID..

But then the young one says to the other "but can't we do anything?" to which the other one goes "no, not our job..."

They were the border patrol
