Commute Advice!

Good Morning all.

I have now secured a job starting in August in Muttenz, BL.

I am 80% sure I will be living in Rheinfelden, and will obviously be looking to commute the 13km to Muttenz.

For starters - I'm going to preface that I have Crohns and public transport is something I have always struggled on. My partner and I could have a car but we really don't want to have that bother.

Option a) Train. Daily commute from Rheinfelden to Muttenz looks at about 5chf a day with a travelcard - if someone could verify that for me it would be much appreciated.

Bonus points - If anyone could confirm as to whether the trains on that line have toilet facilities on the train, and if the trains are busy with people going to Basel.

Option b) Cycling. Cycling is one of my favourite hobbies and 13 km does not trouble me at all. I might have to retrofit my bike with a mudguard and a big seatpost bag for my work clothes/towel/lunchbox.

This would save me (however menial) money, and 150km a working week would be great for my health.

I'v roughly googlemapped it and it seems ok - hard to gauge hills but I assume its all flat?

If anyone has any input that would be hugely appreciated.

Re: Commute Advice!

How will you get from your home to Reinfelden station?
How will you get from Muttenz station to your work. (and vv)

Check at Reinfelden CFF/SBB station for price of a monthly or annual season ticket. Also ask for First Class price. Always less crowded, but not always near to the on board toilets.

Train journey is 12 minutes

Toilets at CFF stations are notoriously bad and always cost money. (The one at Nyon is often out of service(. You will have to check out the route to see if there are cafes etc at each station that you might be able to use.

Re: Commute Advice!

Hey - Thanks for the fast reply -

If I'm getting the train (I think only really likely if it's raining or too snowy) i'd be walking which would be <5 minutes each side of the stations.

12 Minutes isn't too long to be honest - but it's nice to have that security of being able to throw up if I need to!

When the snow is on the ground - how good are the Swiss at clearing/gritting the roads?

Depends on where you live. Motorways really good, main roads as well, back roads different story.

I'm my experience.. When it's particularly heavy snow, you may have a few extra seconds wait time for the bus.

Re: Commute Advice!

Google Maps also shows elevation. Essentially flat.
https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Mutt....55219!3e1!5i2

Another option is commuting by ebike (if commute time by normal bike is an issue).

Re: Commute Advice!

Reported in 20min …woman commutes 1,300 kilometers a day..

“She gets up at 3:30 am and catches the 5:09 am train at Naples Central Station. She arrives in Milan on time for the start of her shift at 10.30 a.m. After her shift ends at 5:00 p.m., she takes the train again and is home at 10:53 p.m. If there are no delays, she will be home just in time for dinner, says Giuseppina Giuliano on the "Corriere del Mezzogiorno".

Reasoning…
-She enjoys being close to family ( between 22:53 and 03:30 and some sleep?)
- A flat in Milan is €600 and the train only €400 ( so 45 hours on the train to save €200)

Beat That 👍🤗🤔

Re: Commute Advice!

Is an electric scooter an option / or clasic scooter ? --> you should not need to change clothes if you use this option vs bike.
With a car you need to secure a parking space and would be more costly than a subscription on your route with a train.

Re: Commute Advice!

If you already like biking then that's a no-brainer, no?

I do 38km/round trip and it's the best part of my day.

I was going to joke about no such thing as "flat" in Switzerland....but yes, it's flat.

Website SwitzerlandMobility (also accessible by mobile app) has hiking, cycling and many more routes. Includes super detailed topo maps. I've been in the mountains and every turn in hiking paths is easily recognizable.

Re: Commute Advice!

-Rheinfelden to Muttenz is flat(-ish). Nothing an experienced cyclist would call a hill. Friend of mine has done that commute for years.
-There are cycling routes (mostly) from Rheinfelden to Muttenz.
-When it snows, cycling routes and cycling lanes are usually not a priority when it comes to cleaning. If you get a week of snow here, that's a lot. You could still switch to the train.

-The S1 does have a toilet, but only one. The trains will be very full at the usual commuting times.
-Should you decide to commute by train, get a U-Abo. Much cheaper than buying tickets. If your employer offers "Jobticket", it's even cheaper.

Welcome to the neighbourhood

Re: Commute Advice!

Not sure cycling will be better for your disease?

I have a much easier condition of IBS and I have had some unpleasant experiences out on my long rides. It isn't like there are easy access toilets on the road. And all of the moving can exacerbate the condition.

I think the rather short commute by train should be less risky than on a bike.

Er, the OP asked the question in 2019. Subsequent posts elsewhere suggested he left Switzerland a few months later.

There are parts of Aargau that are as flat as Nebraska.

I've found myself riding the bike in 1 gear combination in one direction, and using 1/3 easier on the way back. Looks flat, but that 0.5-1% slope is there...always.

Would have made an interesting individual post

I read that article this AM too - I commute a long distance myself (Bern - Zurich Airport) and understand modern life and its financial constraints, but that's just too bloody much. Poor gal - I hope she gets to work from home a bit.

I remember reading a story pre pandemic about an English guy who commutes from Barcelona - London.

Here it is:

https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2...o-makes-it-pay

When we were living in Luxembourg, many of the bankers commuted from Paris - madness.
