Nope. As soon as you are registered in CH are you not allowed to drive foreign plated cars within CH.

Unless it's one you've declared and you've been in Switzerland less than 12 months, of course :-) I can imagine that a borrowed parent's car hasn't been declared.

Re: Buying a second hand car in Switzerland

Sorry to bump this guys, what does exactly the MFK cover? I mean, if I buy a used car fresh of MFK with 12 months insurance, what can I be relaxed about? Engine, brakes, etc?

thanks!

Antonio

It only means that it was road legal when they tested it, nothing else. The engine could fail the next day.

Re: Buying a second hand car in Switzerland

Buy something like a Toyota Aygo if you don't want to spend a lot of money: cheap to buy, cheap to drive, low fixed costs and #1 in the Adac statistics.

MAX 10'000 CHF, but it has to be mid sized (Peugeot 2004, Citroen C4 etc.). I have found some offers but either seems to expensive for the car or not very reliable seller

MFK wont check oil and neither break fluid (They check the break fluid in Austria)
Also tyres, brake discs and pads have just to be above the bare legal minimum to pass. Any damages which have repaired according good practice are not an issue for MFK.

Friend of mine bought unbeknownst an insurance write off. He was only made aware when he had been contacted by police/prosecutor if he wants to be a joint plaintiff in the ongoing fraud case

Unfortunately there is no VIN database of known Swiss write offs.

Re: Buying a second hand car in Switzerland

I guess if you know cars well, you can buy a good car for 10k.

2018 Skoda Rapids with warranty seem to start around the 13-15k.

If you go for cheaper, you might want to take it to TCS for a pre-purchase inspection.

Cheap cars go to export here rather quickly, because the dealer still has to provide some sort of warranty. And that's only worth the hassle if you make some profit with it to begin with.

Plenty of stuff on offer up to 10k.
First example on autoscout, with reasonable mileage and age, here (as you mentioned the french):
https://www.autoscout24.ch/de/d/peug...?vehid=7216351
Although, 20xy are still "small-sized" IMO.

There are Toyotas, VWs, Skodas, Fords, Opels, even BMWs - whatever's to your liking in midsize.
And most with 12 months warranty post purchase - just buy from a garage.
