Re: Fined for tailgating on autobahn

Thought I'd upload the photo I got. According to the note, the distance should have been about twice as big as it is.
The cars coming up behind all seem a lot more bunched (although perspective can play tricks). Wonder whether any of them got nailed?

I commute to Zurich regularly and the distances between cars on the Flughafen Autobahn are generally smaller than that in the photo. Not saying it's right, just that driving a lot maybe one picks up bad habits...

My solution is to gently take my foot off the accelerator. They get the idea very soon. Turning on your tail lights also has a positive effect.
That's worse than tailgaiting.

Do you not need to be tailgating over a longer stretch for it to be considered tailgating? I’d have asked for evidence of this.

There are three measuring points in the table… so I guess thats what is needed to call it tailgating.

I find it a bit harsh to be fined for that. 26m may be less than 2 seconds but it's not like you're on someone's rear bumper.
It is way below typical reaction time - i.e. not when one is actually looking for something to happen, but maybe already a bit tired and in a boring traffic and suddenly bam! - a car in front does something unexpected.
Then it is not only one's reaction time that counts but also of the cars behind.

I still don’t see how one picture can incriminate for tailgating. What if you were pulling out to overtake a lorry that’s up ahead? If that’s tailgating then everyone else behind in the pic must also have gotten nobbled.

Again: the table has two measurement points, but I guess they just take one picture for IDing the driver when necessary. They only charged for the "cheaper" of the two measurements.

Re: Fined for tailgating on autobahn

I wish that this would also apply to Swiss roads. I have to deal with constant tailgating in the highways in here - even on areas where there is only one lane and we are driving at the speed limit, even while raining.

For some reason, I've noticed that most tailgaters are fans of one specific car brand. I'd like to understand that statistical detail...

I saw that too, and the speed limit sign is even visible in the photo.

If I'm reading it right, they measured 26m from the front of one car to the front of the other? As opposed to the back of the first car to the front of Snoopy's car? I always thought the 2-second rule was as Sandgrounder described.

If I try to keep more than that distance on my way from Zurich to Luzern, I´d have cars pulling in that spot a hundred times.............

Is that an argument against keeping proper distance or should in turn not those 100 cars be fined? I never understood how Switzerland deems driving 130 something incredibly dangerous, but yeah, just pull up and close that gap completely at highway speed to make sure the one guy who did not hog the left lane is now stuck behind the lorry and has no chance to ever overtake...

See the bottom row of the top measurement section? That seems to be the data about the length of the two vehicles. The lines are apparently at the leading edge of the wheels, so I guess they add to that to derive bumper to bumper distance.

No argument against keeping the distance. It is just an observation. And exactly what is happening every day......... Which is why I prefer the right hand lane (and have to wait multiple times before I can pass by a truck....)

It's a small pen1s problem. They believe they have to make up for it in other ways.

What car brand was it anyway?

Re: Fined for tailgating on autobahn

Whilst I haven't heard of the Swiss police fining anybody for tailgating alone I have heard of occasions where they add extra fines to your speeding fine if you are tailgating and even more if you are in a large SUV.

An acquaintance got a 6 figure fine for 110 in a tunnel, tailgating and being in an SUV admin costs were another 4k, I believe the main fine was a suspended fine or at least partly suspended.

Speeding and tailgating I get as offences, but increasing it because of the type of vehicle?

I could imagine them taking a dim view if you're driving like a berk in a 40-tonne lorry or with a busload of people but an SUV is still a private vehicle, same as any other.

That sort of fines are based on day rates of your income. In other words: Your friend has enough to pay this and would have just laughed at a few hundred...
