My solution is to gently take my foot off the accelerator. They get the idea very soon. Turning on your tail lights also has a positive effect.
My solution is to pull over as soon as possible and let the moron pass. If there is no possibility of pulling over, I just gradually slow down to ensure that if I have to do an emergency stop, the moron won't go into the back of me.

It's not about educating other road users, it's about keeping me safe.

Is that an argument against keeping proper distance or should in turn not those 100 cars be fined? I never understood how Switzerland deems driving 130 something incredibly dangerous, but yeah, just pull up and close that gap completely at highway speed to make sure the one guy who did not hog the left lane is now stuck behind the lorry and has no chance to ever overtake...
Keeping the proper distance is not really a valid solution, problem is that especially during rush hours there are much more cars on the road than this distance would allow. So if we wan't to keep the distance we would see a tremendous growth of traffic jams at the entry's to the highway.

Re: Fined for tailgating on autobahn

Wish I'd see a system like this in CH - although I agree that the legal distances are unrealistic in the current state of roads

What one should do (with a good dose of AI/computer vision) is identify the significantly dangerous tailgaters - like the situation further at the back of the picture posted by the OP

But on the other hand I also dream of a camera system to automatically fine left-lane and middle-lane hoggers - with the later being thrown into hell as matter of general principle. Now that's a subject for another interesting thread

By law, car speedometers must never read below the real speed. They almost always over-read. In very few cases (my car, for example), the speedo is bang-on exactly correct, but even then factors like temperature and tyre pressure can affect the reading.

Those roadside speed displays are most likely set to over-read, too, for the same reason: road safety. Better that drivers think they're speeding and slow down, than not.
How much they over read is a configurable parameter that the manufacturer can set, it's a requirement from the car manufacturers to the electronics suppliers.

Yep, excellent "advertisement" for that company. I especially "adore" the ones that drive on the left side in tunnels when not allowed and then suddenly turning right sharply in front of you...
I have on several occasions called the company in question. The response is fairly blasé most of the time, some become indignant, very few agree that it's a problem...

If you are, then that makes two of us.

People follow very close here, and it's a bad habit that's easy to fall into. I murmer "one not, two not, three" fairly regularly when I'm driving.

Why the count to 3? Because it's easier to make sure you have a little bit of leeway than it is to bash the dents out of the car's nose.
I say one one thousand two one thousand

Re: Fined for tailgating on autobahn

1. I confirm that a German friend got his license suspended for this.
2. Be aware that these devices are installed in Germany under bridges and looking downward to the road.
This is why before each overhead bridge there are lines to mark an average minimum distance.
Also worth noting: if you overtake someone and get right in their face, and there's a bridge coming up in a few meters, they will get very upset with you. Well, now you know why

You can reconfigure the mechanical ones too, but it's a bit of a patience test: http://obswww.unige.ch/~wildif/cars/...edo_repair.pdf

Re: Fined for tailgating on autobahn

In busy traffic, a friend of mine pulled into the right hand lane, which then filtered off. He was later stopped by the police who'd seen this manoeuvre from two cars behind, and he was fined for driving too close to the car in front. It wasn't the pulling over that was the issue, it was that having done so, he didn't adjust his speed to increase the gap to a safe distance. This was in a tunnel, so compounded the offence.

Re: Fined for tailgating on autobahn

Is the two second rule still a good rule of thumb?

Can anyone point to the official Swiss safe stopping distances? (and others perhaps German / French / Italian)

Just plain aggressive; there's nothing passive about it.

I was tailgated this morning at a distance of about 5m (I guess—my rear vision mirror was completely full of truck grille) at 100 km/h (bang on the speed limit)—in the right hand lane of the motorway! The moron pulled out to overtake me just as the road started going uphill, leaving himself far behind me and blocking the left lane. The truck was adorned with the company name "SIDLER", in case anyone from there is reading this...
Had exactly the same thing happening to me. Approaching a busy junction and the guy in the same truck inches from me and flashing his lights.

Another dreadful habit which seems particularly prevalent in CH is people getting into the overtaking lane at all costs. Mostly happens with cars joining the motorway, cut across both lanes doing 80.

Yesterday I witnessed the following....I was driving around 90 in the right lane, in front, another car and then a truck a little further up.

Traffic was moving fairly well and I was waiting for an opportunity to overtake. The lady in front then decides to move out to the overtaking lane into a line of much faster overtaking traffic. It was inches away from a horrible collision with the cars now behind having to break hard, the first almost spinning out of control and a second almost smashing into him (probably tailgaiting).

I looked up her reg and found her details when I got home. Not sure if I should report it or not but that kind of driving kills people.

If people have that kind of attitude...
