I was being investigated for tailgating on the highway near Mannheim.
good. i wish they'd introduce this in switzerland. or allow self-install car kits you can attach to the back of your car and fine people who tail-gate you.

maybe there is a market for rear-facing dashcams? You can then take the evidence to the police. Next thing for Russian drivers maybe

I went back to the UK for a couple of weeks a while ago and was amazed by the amount of cars with dashcams back and front. The appalling driving hasn't seemed to have improved because of it, as far as I could tell, but it seems to be providing a whole fresh source of viral videos...

My wife once overheard someone say "You're not a real mOROn if you don't stay in the 'fast lane".

If people have that kind of attitude...

When correcting people it is best to not make mistakes yourself.

0.78 seconds for 26 m.

we should also not forget about the reaction time in addition to the delay in reaction time
In reality you have more time than 0.78s because it is not a wall ahead of you. And even if the car ahead falls apart, the parts will continue to move for some time. Not supporting tailgating though.

I think it is also protection against scams such as people throwing themselves at your car or pulling out in front of you and slamming on the brakes

In consequence you assume a shorter distance between start-braking point and stand-still point for yourself. Everything else being equal, things dont' work like that, instead you'll hit the car in front of you.

If the car upfront of you smashes in a mobile roadblock 0,78s is about exactly all you have. And most people do not look ahead 100% of the time. It is easy to skip a moment for the radio, grab a drink, look at the dashboard or whatever.

Also from that 0.78s you'll lose about 0.5S before you actually respond, so what are you going to do in the remaining 280ms?

I also tailgate (I think most Dutch do and we are more used to it.) But if something goes wrong I admit that it is likely that things just go wrong for me also.

In the case of a highway pile-up, there's no warning.
One can literally hit a roadblock.

I've got a car with adaptive cruise control.
If anyone's tailgating me, I set its minimum distance to two notches more than the minimum setting, to accommodate a safe breaking distance for the other driver too.

Re: Fined for tailgating on autobahn

I drove 500 km through Germany today. It seems like half of them is driving 30 km/h slower than the limit and the other half 30 faster. Result is that all are extremely frustrated.

In such a case you're toast anyway. Even with 2secs distance (thereof 1sec used to react) you'll hit the pile-up with more than 100km/h.

Re: Fined for tailgating on autobahn

If your car is of type autonomous Leve 1 with ACC, you can flick it on and not worry about getting too close to the one ahead. On the VW there are five settings between min, normal and max. If its raining, it is not recommend to use the min setting. What happens in a complete breaking I have never figured out cause I've always braked myself when the alarm sounded consequently disengaging the ACC. What I have noticed is that on the min setting at 120 I'm about 2 secs behind the car in front. Which is considered normal for a cordial Swiss driver. In Germany I guess I would have to at least use the setting between min and normal?

Verdict is in.... 75 Euro fine and 25 Euros costs...so 100 all in all.
I can pay by credit card if I want

Letter came registered with a return signature card. I guess they really want to make sure I got it!
