Fined for tailgating on autobahn

Ok, this is a new one for me.

Got a letter from Germany telling me that I was being investigated for tailgating on the highway near Mannheim. Speed 120, distance from me to the car in front 26m, i.e less than half the required distance. They provided me with a login to see the evidence: a lovely photo taken from an overhead gantry with all the measurement calculations.

I admitted guilt, gave all my personal details and saved the form as required. They asked why I committed the infraction (voluntary). I thought of writing “stupidity” but refrained.

Looks like the fine will be 75 Euros.
This was a new one for me...speeding I know all about
Anyone else been caught like this yet?

No need to crucify me...the mrs. has already completed that task (difficult to type hanging up) and I am full of remorse. But it does lengthen my list of (albeit relatively minor) infractions.

I wish they did this in Switzerland - home of the passive aggressive tailgater...

33m/S at 120 kph, so 0.78S to travel 26m.

120000/3600 = 33.3333...

It's no fun crucifying people who admit to having screwed up *huffs*

They apparently do spot checks in unmarked cars but are talking about paying more attention to this problem. Because it really is a problem, increasingly so.

Ahum...

When correcting people it is best to not make mistakes yourself.

.79s for 26 m.

Let's also not forget about the delay in reaction time.

Yeah the legal margins are not taking account the need of extra highway if we all would stick to the official rules.

Is this the "Only a fool forgets the two-second rule" scenario? Where you count the time it takes to pass the same point in the road that the car in front has passed and if it takes less time than it takes to chant the above rhyme, you're too close. Or am I behind the times..?

If you are, then that makes two of us.

People follow very close here, and it's a bad habit that's easy to fall into. I murmer "one not, two not, three" fairly regularly when I'm driving.

Why the count to 3? Because it's easier to make sure you have a little bit of leeway than it is to bash the dents out of the car's nose.

Re: Fined for tailgating on autobahn

Long story short: We had some famous and deadly crashes in Germany about a decade ago. Most famously a young family who died in a crash as the driver panicked when a tailgater basically pushed him off the left lane. As a result were the ridiculously low fines raised (a little) and the policing ramped up.

I personally am the first to be annoyed about all the speed cams in CH but fully support this: I would bet that 26 meters distance is more than the average on the commuter highways into Zurich every morning and at 120 is it not the speed that produces the many accidents but the lack of distance.

The massive amount of speed traps and no distance controls never made sense to me at all.

Re: Fined for tailgating on autobahn

Do you not need to be tailgating over a longer stretch for it to be considered tailgating? I’d have asked for evidence of this.

I’ve also known someone get done for this in Switzerland after getting spotted by an unmarked police car.

I do hope Germany gets more proactive in going after aggressive tailgaters. What's with all the idiots who drive up so close that you can't even see their registration plates and flash lights at you because they want to overtake even though you're already doing the speed limit (in a place where there is a speed limit).

Isn't it logical to keep your safe distance, even if you think the guy in front is a pedant or an idiot. Maybe especially if you think he is a pedant or an idiot.

I find it a bit harsh to be fined for that. 26m may be less than 2 seconds but it's not like you're on someone's rear bumper.

My solution is to gently take my foot off the accelerator. They get the idea very soon. Turning on your tail lights also has a positive effect.
