SBB refuses to cool down trains in heat wave

Good afternoon,

Hope you are all staying cool in this heat.

Just wanted to post this article about SBBís refusal to cool down their trains on the hottest days:

https://m.20min.ch/schweiz/news/stor...ehlen-22598677

I was on a train with a registered inside temp of 42.5 C. I have asthma and this is dangerous, not to mention the countless other people who could be severely affected.

In the article, they state that they have received few complaints, which I find to be entirely unlikely. If you would like to join me in complaint, hereís the link:

https://www.sbb.ch/en/meta/contacts/...criticism.html

Your help is appreciated.

Re: SBB refuses to cool down trains in heat wave

I read it that the SBB won't cool down trains any further, not refuse to cool down trains.

A few of the old-style trains are blisteringly hot but the majority are the modern ones which are pretty pleasant.

Re: SBB refuses to cool down trains in heat wave

No, I was on a modern train yesterday that was over 40 C...the train attendant stated they were instructed to turn it off as they reached the quota allowed.

I was also stuck in the Bern mess (took 6 hours to get home). The train was sweltering, but when they announced the problem, it was suddenly cool again. The trains can indeed be pleasant if they turn the air on and keep it on.

What did he mean by "quota" in this case?

I’m guessing the amount of energy used? They keep caps on that...have you commuted lately?

What was the Bern mess anyway? Was there an answer? I wasn't there but a friend was stuck for hours.

AFAIK there were some bent tracks due to heat.

Maybe SBB should start painting tracks white like the Italians do.

Right. But with very few exceptions (non-refurbished 1st generation Zurich S-Bahn trains) you can open the windows which solves much of the problem.

Re: SBB refuses to cool down trains in heat wave

Come on guys, whether you think Susie-Q is a moaner or not, a 40c train is downright dangerous whichever way you look at it, assuming you have an iota of common sense. Especially the elderly and the very young will be at risk.

At the very worst for young and healthy people 40c is damn uncomfortable and I would not want to be riding on a train like that.

SBB should have a maximum allowable temperature on board their trains, and if they need extra cooling then they should provide it.

And if that means cancelling trains due to the power overload, sobeit!

Yes Tom that is exactly what I meant... push the a/c to the point where they overload the train and it stops and strands everyone. Makes perfect sense.

Re: SBB refuses to cool down trains in heat wave

I have a ~2h daily commute (each way), comprising S-Bahn and IC. As much as S-Bahn was amazing in air conditioning (I didn't want to get off at the destination), IC would make you assess better the borders of your mental capacity. On top of that, one morning they had cut the usual extra front cars of the train, leading to many people sitting in the stairs (You imagine the weather yourself).

The fact that Pro Bahn is intervening probably means I have not been an exception or a snowflake. The reason I didn't complain about it was exactly the attitudes like the one seen in this thread, answering everything with "why don't you go back to where you came from"...

Re: SBB refuses to cool down trains in heat wave

A relative of mine was on a train recently from Bern to Zurich. Apparently it ground to a halt as there was some technical problem. As it was hot, it would appear that some males started removing their trousers

Not sure I would inflict that on anyone, not even in a heat wave!

You seem to be always complaining about something, if it's really that terrible here, why don't you just move on and find paradise elsewhere ?

You always seem to be trolling on the Englishforum, what’s your problem? I guess you got tired of attacking the guy who was worried about his wife? Nobody will talk to you in real life? Don’t have anything better to do? My guess is you don’t have a job either so don’t have to deal with a sweltering commute.

I found his answer a bit surprising and agressive, but there's no need to lose all civility and start hitting back.

Let's keep it clean, and focus on the climate in trains, a topic I will care about A LOT soon, as I will start a 60+ min commute come August 5th.

Re: SBB refuses to cool down trains in heat wave

All I know is that in the last few years there have been some major SBB/CFF total outages impacting a good part of Switzerland, and they seem to have coincided with previous very high temp. days. Wierd coincidence or ..., I think the grid cannot handle all the traffic and extra electric intake needed for cooling on the blistering days.

Don't know about you, but "if you don't like it here just leave" stirs up in me a similar "allergic" reaction. Especially when it comes from a fellow expat/immigrant/foreigner, whatever you call them. Btw, that's a minor rant.
