Sale of car to purchaser in another canton

How does that work? I'm in GE, where I bought the vehicle. I had no plates so I went with the seller to the SCV to exchange the grey card and to get new plates for me.

Now I've advertised the car and someone in SG is expressing keen interest. He has plates, but what happens with the grey card? I will need to hand in the existing one to cancel it, surely? So how will he drive the car home?

Re: Sale of car to purchaser in another canton

You do not hand the card over, you get a stamp on it and then you give it to the buyer. (at least that is how I had to do it last week, as a buyer I needed the original with that stamp on it to be able to register the car again)

And the trader probably has plates for the business that he can just stick on any car that is in possession of the company.

OK, then. So I would need to get this stamp from the SCV here in GE, which means concluding the sale during business hours.

I was hoping here might be a way to do this on a weekend.

Re: Sale of car to purchaser in another canton

Some more options:
1) You let him drive back on your own plates.

2) Buyer has to make multiple trips.

3) You send him a copy of the gray card so that he can get day plates. After that you can cancel gray card.

4) You get the stamp beforehand. Draw back no test drive unless he has dealer plates.

5) Buyer is so sure about the sale he transfers money beforehand, you mail stamped gray card by mail.

6) If he is a private person which has own plate, it can all be done by mail. The card does not have to be canceled, so a test drive before sale is possible. After conclusion of contract remove your plates. Look that he fills in the relevant form, puts your gray card and one copy of the form in a envelope, put A-post stamp and address of StVA SG on envelope, and finally put the whole letter into the nearest mail box. After that buyer can drive away on its own plate and its own insurance.

The form for a person with SG plates is this one. Two copies are needed. One to be mailed, the other to be kept in car.:

Just remove your plates & take CASH only, then let the buyer sort it out.
I sold my car advertised on the Forum, to a Polish dealer, he got German export plates which he attached to the car in ZH then drove to Poland.

Just write "CANCELLED" on the grey card.

7) Or I drive to SG and we sort it out together at the StVA SG, assuming that he stills wants the car after seeing it. Will I have to use Google translate in this case, though? It's long time since I was last in SG.

No, do not do that. This is bad for your negotiation position. Let the other person come over. Someone who has to drive for 2-3 hours is likely to buy the car.

It needs to be cancelled in the system to have any meaning whatsoever....
