Motorcycle touring near St. Gallen

I will be renting a motorcycle in Lichtensteig and staying in St. Gallen at the end of July. Can you recommend some scenic routes in the area? Almost anywhere there is scenic to me as where I live in the US is flat and no curvy roads. I don't care to ride too far as I am limited to 600 km for the weekend on the rental.

Re: Motorcycle touring near St. Gallen

Head down to GR and do the passes (Julier, Abula, Stelvio, Bernina, Ofen, etc.)

How about a couple from these?

1st of August is our national holiday (our 4th of July), lots of stuff will be closed, and retail shops are likely to close early the day before.

Re: Motorcycle touring near St. Gallen

What will you get? A Triumph/Indian from American Bikes or KTM/Kawasaki from Destimoto?

Not sure when you will get the bike. If on Friday evening here a short "test ride" tour to get familiar with the bike and Swiss roads.
https://goo.gl/maps/UCrMFucrus7fi4Ja7
or a bit less curvy
https://goo.gl/maps/BMfVirvorispUJHR9
In both cases I added the picturesque town of Appenzell.

Here one possible route which takes you through 4 countries.
https://kurv.gr/lqlPV
(Be aware that the Silvretta Hochalpenstrasse and the Kaunertaler Gletscherstrasse are toll roads.)

Here an other one which would be good for a two day trip, but it brings you over your 600 km budget:

And here one which is, including the "test ride", within the 600 km budget.
https://kurv.gr/hLc6d

Be aware about speed limits and fines. If you drive on Austrian Highways you will need a toll sticker, the bike should have the Swiss highway toll sticker.

Re: Motorcycle touring near St. Gallen

Thank you all for the suggestions. Renting a KTM 790 from Destimoto. I may be able to pick it up on Friday. My flight arrives in Zurich at 2 pm. It depends on how long it takes to get to my AirBnB in St. Gallen and then to Destimoto.

Re: Motorcycle touring near St. Gallen

Is there any restrictions about tinted face-shields? I was wondering if there might be because of the use of speed cameras.

Only that you can't use dark tinted ones at night.

In most European states a helmet and its visor (if attached) must be according ECE-Regulation No. 22-05
Helmet as visor must bear a type approval mark. (E in a circle)
https://www.unece.org/fileadmin/DAM/...et_Helmets.pdf
and also in full detail.
https://www.unece.org/?id=39142

For nighttime use the visor must have a transmittance of at least 80% (as defined by the regulation). For daytime use it must have a transmittance of at least 50% and must be accordingly marked if transmittance is less than 80%. Tear offs are not allowed. A pinlock insert is allowed but might be for daytime use only. On the other hand a visor is purely optional.

If you have a non-complainant helmet/visor you can be fined (CH: CHF 60, DE EUR 10, IT: EUR 81 - 326) and the vehicle can be impounded (IT: 60 days, Art. 171 Codice della Strada). Never had an issue with my attached pinlock insert.

In addition France applies the 6.16.1. option of ECE Regulation No. 22 and mandates that the helmet has reflective stickers. But as far as I understand it, it only applies to helmet sold in France. https://www.securite-routiere.gouv.f...orise/conseils

Speaking of France, they also mandate that you wear gloves and that the gloves have a CE mark and Motorcycle symbol. If not, you can be fined EUR 68 (reduced to EUR 45 if paid within 15 days) https://www.securite-routiere.gouv.f...ise/conseils-0

The French also say that you cannot use head phones. An helmet mounted communication system is o.k. https://www.securite-routiere.gouv.f...se/equipements

The Austria, Hungary, Czechia, Slovenia, and Slovakia requested that you have a small first aid kit https://www.oeamtc.at/thema/reisepla...uropa-16183508

Nearly finally, many European countries (not CH) mandate that you have a high visibility vest (Cost something like EUR 5/CHF 5) at an easy reachable place and wear it in case of a break down.

Last but not least, if you drive a Swiss plated vehicle abroad you must have a CH Sticker at the back. Most countries are rather relaxed if you do not have it. But if you meet a grumpy Carabinieri he might fine you up and more than EUR 300 if you do not have one, nor in the correct size. But at least they will not impound the vehicle. The correct size is the big version as it is used on cars.
