Tax Refund Commute

Hey there,

So I've read up on this and searched quite a bit but can't seem to find the firm answer (maybe my Swiss German isn't good enough) but what are the rules regarding claiming a tax deduction for your commute to work?

I know ZH is a maximum 3000 CHF but is there a minimum value to meet?
Is this valid for all cantons? I was looking at moving to Glarus to be closer to work and shorten the commute but can't find information on rules of a minimum commute price I need to reach or how to check.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Tax Refund Commute

You need at least 18k Km/year to claim.

For commuting expense tax deduction in Ct. Glarus, please see p. 15, para. 2:

In ZH the cap for cantons/commune tax is CHF 5000. The cap for federal tax is CH 3000 (which most likely is Swiss wide as it is federal tax)
In ZH you can nearly always claim the public transport cost and/or a bicycle (they might object if you work in the same house or across the street).
You can claim motor bike or car if certain conditions are fulfilled, such as 1h of time saving per day over public transport.

For more information on a particular (German speaking) canton search for: wegleitung steuererklärung <canton name> <year>

Which gives you this for Glarus and 2018.
https://www.gl.ch/public/upload/asse...erung_2018.pdf

This applies to regular taxation (Swiss, permit C, and above 120k income per year) other rules might apply for tax at source recalculation.

PS: Official documents are written in Standard German. No need to know Swiss German.
