Bought a discount train ticket - I ended up on another train

I purchased a Discounted ticket with a few connections.
When I arrived at one of the connections (LATE - the train arrived late) i missed my next train.

I decided to get on a train that woul get me to my final destination HOWEVER it went a different route.

For example

I bought a ticket that did this....
A --- B --- C --- D
Due to the LATE train I did this.

A --- B --- F --- D

I was ONLY asked to verify my ticket on the A --- B portion.

My question is, Was I in the wrong for taking the route I took?
Could I have been fined?
My understanding is the ticket I purchased (the discounted ticket) was for specific trains.

Just curious as nothing happened to me, but I'm sure this will come up again for me so I thought I'd ask.

Re: Bought a discount train ticket - I ended up on another train

My understanding is that if you buy a supersaver (discount) ticket and you‘re unable to follow the intended route because the train is late, you‘re ok and you just take whatever gets you to your destination.

That‘s the theory. In practice, I don‘t know how it works, or if an SBB person will give you shit, and what you do then. It should not be a problem, though.

From the CFF website:
Quote:
Where a train is cancelled or delayed or a route is closed, you may use the next connection with confirmation from the ticket inspector or sales agent.

I had this experience once. My train was late to arrive at Bern (technical issue halfway between Zurich and Bern) and I only had around 2 mins to change to next train. With me being a little on heavy side together couldn't run fast enough to next gate.

I went to the "information + tickets office" and they said that I could take any train to go to my destination. They did not do anything with the original ticket.

They casn so easily check on their Red Box thing if a train has been delayed and if it has, their is no questions asked about using a defined ticket on antoher train

I assume that's as long as you took the next train, as opposed to going for lunch and then taking a much later train.

Doesn’t matter, what matters is the train that you were supposed to take was delayed or missed a connection.

Hmm, not sure how you're supposed to get confirmation from the ticket inspector when most trains don't have one anymore, or if they do, they hide away in their little office. Haven't seen a ticket inspector for years and there are some sectors of the network that never get checked.

It's all done via the Red Box they all carry now, or if you have the time and there is a ticket office open with people working you can get them to stamp the ticket as a valid ticket for the whole day on the particular route yopu are travelling.

Just think Red Box.....

I did the same thing, but I ended up with a reprinted ticket that was valid on any train.
