Parking place is illegally occupied by other's car

I rented a parking place underground. Today I retured home and found a car illegally parking on my spot. I have to park my car in another paid parking place far away from my appartment. What should I do? Many thanks!

Re: Parking place is illegally occupied by other's car

Oh, that's really annoying!

First of all, I hope that by "another paid parking space" you mean that you've paid for a space (with a parking meter, for example) and not that you've encroached upon someone else's reserved space.

If you are a new tenant of this parking space, then I suggest you first double-check that you really are looking at the right parking space. Been there, done that. I thought I'd rented the space "number 8" across the way, but it turned out that my space was the "number 8" next-door.

If you're sure about which space it is, then take a photograph of the car, with number-plates. Attach a politely worded letter to the car, explaining that this is a privately rented space and that it is not allowed for anyone else to park there. (This was, in fact, how I discovered my error, when those people came to explain the confusion to me.)

You could also ask your neighbours about the space. If, before you rented it, that space had not been rented out for a long time, people may have become accustomed to using it without any problem. If that's the case, just tell them that you're now here, and that this space is yours. (It might be a good chance to say hi and introduce yourself.)

As soon as the space is vacant again, place a traffic cone or similarly known warning item on the space. The disadvantage is that then you will have to get out and move that object out of the way whenever you want to park. But the advantage is that that same effort will most likely deter at least lazy parkers from bothering to use your space.

If someone does park in your space again, photograph that car again, and then appeal to the caretaker/agent/landlord for help, asking how best to protect your space.

I hope some of those tips help you get it sorted out amicably.

Me too! My 'private space' kept on being used. I even pulled a man out of a business meeting to move his car and eventually put a sign up. The parking administrator then sent me a letter telling me that I cannot put up a 'reserved' sign in a public parking garage! Seems my spot was one level down!

I print out PRIVAT on A4 and tape it (honest) with box tape to the windshield. No one has ever come back.

Needlessly aggressive. Why assume malice when it could be a genuine mistake? Repeat offenders, however,....

Since we put "Privat" signs up in our bays ten years ago, we've never had any trouble.
