Replacing BMW tyres - change to standard from runflats?

Hello,

I wish to order replacement summer tyres on my 3 series touring, will get them online from Reifendirect (best price).

Question to those in the know: is it best to stick to run-flat tyres or could I take this as an opportunity to replace with standard tyres? Just asking as I hear that standard tyres offer a more comfy ride... but i have no idea about compatability with my alloys / rims that take standard run-flats. Have sent an email to Reifendirect, waiting for reply. Thought i'd check on here in case others have experience..

thanks for your help!

Also, these are what was recommended by the main dealer. Any suggestions on alternative options highly appreciatesd (2010 325d touring)

You can have normal tyres on run-flat rims but no run-flat tyres on regular rims. check with your dealer.

I have a 3 series too and also thought about switching to regulars at the time when I had to change tyres.

I considered it for about erm 5 minutes before I decided to stick with run flats. The cost on Reifendirect wasnít at all that different and considering you have to buy a compressor and the liquid to be able to use regular tyres it wasnít worth the hassle for me.

After some more digging around on the net I arrive at the following understanding: handling, noise and road comfort (and possibly rolling resistance / economy) is better with standard tyres vs. run flats. BUT, most of the info I found is from UK and US-based drivers where the roads arent exactly buttery smooth. I have never had the misfortune of a puncture, but dont want to tempt fate. Anwyay, has all this research online helped?? nope!! I am still on the fence about it.. I guess i wasn't complaining about ride comfort etc. before needing to change tyres, so might just stick to the run flats.

On my previous BMW I did the change...however, that car was fitted with a spare wheel, so it was less of a risk.

I must say that the difference was marked. Really quite a bit different and no crashing over bumps etc. I believe the originals were Dunlop and the replacements Continentals.

I currently have Pirelli runflats on my X5. I was really dissapointed with original tyres. (Dunlop, I think) After not that may kms, the tread wore in such a way (Like a saw tooth) that the tyres created such a drone that I replaced them, eventhough they were still absolutely fine. BMW said this was common with these tyres. (sorry, a bit off topic!)

Anyway, I think that the cost and comfort of non runflats make a compelling argument.

So for you the choice would be to go with non run-flats? Funny thing is I am finding myself noticing more how rough the ride is with my current run flats that need changing..... I can imagine things to me much smoother with standards. I think i will sleep on it before deciding.

For sure. I actually have them on my other car (BMW M2), as you can't get runflats for that car and I'm not concerned about punctures. (I mean, how often do you get punctures?)

I will keep the runflats on the X5 as my wife mainly drives that and it has air suspension, which smooths out the ride. (But those tyres are eye wateringly expensive!)

I changed from runflat to non-runflat on my previous BMW as I really didn't like how it drove on the summer tyres. Then it got a little better and more comfortable.

Runflat winter tyres were fine though.

I did the same, and the ride and handling was massively improved on non-runflats. just make sure your TCS membership is up to date !

In my 8 years here I have had one puncture, which was when I managed to get a bolt lodged into my tyre.

Do report back on your experience please!

Iíve been driving on Runflats for nearly 9 years so Iím completely used to them and canít really imagine how much more smooth the ride would be.

So yeh very curious for when it comes to changing tyres again in 2 or 3 years time (unless I get a puncture!)

Also, note that you can make substantial savings if you buy your tyres online. (Eg Reifendirekt)

They will ship the tyres to a fitter close to you (they have a long list of fitters in various areas), you make an appoint and you are then set.

I’ve seen savings of over CHF150 per tyre, which is substantial. On the site they also provide user ratings of the tyres and information like road noise, efficiency and performance in the wet.

Do report back. PS, what car do you drive? If you have low profile tyres, you will notice the most difference.

EDIT, I see in the original post that you have contacted Reifendirekt already, so I guess you know all of this!

I drive a 325d touring with 225/45 (R17) run-flats.

Have ordered a set of non-run flat Goodyear Eagle F1's from Reifendirekt.. was going to get them sent to a fitter but I know that the ones from Reifendirekt are ' factory fresh' and didnt want to risk the local garage mixing them up with ones sitting on their shelf. Overall indeed much cheaper, with the fitting charge included, works out around 280 - 300 CHF cheaper vs. main dealer on the same set of tyres.

Re: Replacing BMW tyres - change to standard from runflats?

Hi All,

Have installed my new tyres (Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric 3).

Just reporting back on the experience of switching from run-flats. In short: yes, it makes a difference!

Over minor cracks, small holes, and rumble strips you can tell immediately, the softer side walls of the tyres absorb the shock much more effectively. You can still feel the bumps but the sharpness is gone.

Biggest / most noticeable difference: when driving fast (50-80 kph) on rougher surface roads (chose a nearby country road as reference to make it less subjective) it is MUCH MORE smoother!! with the run-flats I could feel the cracks in the road through the suspension and steering... a very very different experience with the standards (quieter, softer and I do not feel the jolt so much, its still there but the tyres are taking the edge out of it).

For me its a very pleasant surprise and I will never go back to run-flats. I'll take my chances with the risk of puncture etc.

Too early to think of any compromises (durability? etc.) perhaps one thing I noticed is a very slight wobble when steering on a sweeping bend on the autobahn but im probably analyzing too much..

Hope this helps.

Re: Replacing BMW tyres - change to standard from runflats?

P.S. for anyone living in Basel I found a very good garage over the border in weil am rhein who did the tyre installation and disposal of old set for only 50 euros (vs. quotes of 130 - 170 CHF from garages in CH). They did a splendid job as well, mechanic knew what he was talking about and they speak English (always helps!). Link below.
