Adria Airways goes bust

The Slovenian carrier filed for bankruptcy last night. It seems they operated, with Swiss, flights from Lugano to Zürich, now 10,000 passengers will be refunded or offered alternative travel (by train or flights from Milan) by Swiss.

I never flew with them, but did look at flying to Ljubljana from ZH with them 2 years ago, but the cost was horrendous. It was cheaper to fly to Venice with Swiss and hire a car.

Report from the Independent

Swiss announcement

Re: Adria Airways goes bust

It's far cheaper/quicker to take the night train in Zurich at 20.40hrs and arrive in Ljubljana at 08.00hrs the next morning.

Re: Adria Airways goes bust

Their prices always seemed extortionate. They had themselves a niche market without anybody else really flying to LJU. From further away than switzerland it was still cheaper to fly to nearly any other airport and get a bus/train to Ljublijana.
I get the feeling the majority of their flights were business people who valued time more than anything.

Re: Adria Airways goes bust

Yesterday I had to take the train, and will again on Friday to go home.

Had to leave home two hours earlier.

Sucks, but closer by train (and better served) than Malpensa!

It'sa wonderful experience travelling by night train, use OBB web site, https://www.oebb.at/en/ book up at least 3-4 weeks in advance and it costs about €100.-- each way in sleeper class.

Kids absolutely love it by the way

We'll have to go on it.

Lots of the European sleepers have ceased service which is a shame so I guess it's use it - or lose it.

Stepping out of a train carriage and into centre of a city immediately makes you realise what a fantastic way to travel the train is.

True, especially if you book one of the OeBB sleepers with en-suite bathroom. I absoluetly love those. But they don't use them on all routes unfortunately.

I love the MAV sleepers too. A bit less luxurious but the staff are funnier and they have better wine.

If you've done that once you'll wonder why you even bothered with flying.

Hold tight, they're coming back in fashion quickly !

The Swiss & Germans sold a lot of sleeper coaches to the Austrians (OBB) a while ago and now they have decided that was a bad idea and are currently looking at buying new ones to run night services.

Another great one is fly to Madrid, couple days in Madrid, take the night train to Lisbon (it was €120.--/person with 2 per compartment), spend a few days in Lisbon (watch out about your timing as it gets very crowded) and fly back.

Did that too. well, the other way round, did an extended stay in Lisbon and included a weekend in Madrid. I wold recommend booking via the RENFE website as SBB doesn't see all the special offers.

Queck question please...

Ljubljana has been on my hit list since it featured on 'The Rough Guide' in the 80s. (remember the late Magenta Devine?). I always had it in my head as being the club capital of Europe before the 90's war, and then Ibiza took the mantel. What's it like now?

Excellent, nice place to visit for 3-4 days, the caves, the castles Lake Bled, good food, not expensive, mainly pedestrian city centre.

Quite difficult, expensive and unreliable to fly too, plus you get dumped outside town somewhere, i cannot emphasis enough, take the night train from Zurich, it's absolutely fantastic, pay a bit more and take a private double cabin.

It's only an hour drive from Trieste (where we have a house).

Of course, Trieste is a 4-5 hour drive from Lugano!
