Importing my motorcycle into Switzerland from USA

Hi, I have 2 motorcycles that I was thinking about shipping and keeping them in Switzerland, when I move back there from the USA. I am an Italian citizen with US residency, when I will move back to Switzerland it will be to live with my parents (I'm not a Swiss resident nor citizen).

How hard is this to do? What is the process?

Taking advices on good shipping companies

Re: Importing my motorcycle into Switzerland from USA

What are they, and are they completely stock?

You can figure around CHF 1000 for shipping, and CHF 2000 to get them past inspection or to purchase COCs.

Each.

And then you need to be a resident to register them.

Re: Importing my motorcycle into Switzerland from USA

Thanks Tom,

Sounds like not worth it, one is a CRF250 Rally stock, the other is a 2017 Africa Twin DCT, stock and it has some aftermarket crash bars, skid plate and luggage racks, 2000CHF to pass inspection? Expensive... what is COCs?

In case I will have my dad register it in his name, is that possible?

COC check this forum how to get one for switzerland

Clear few things for yourself, where will your place of residency will be, where is one of your parents and in which country the motorbikes will be registered. Simplified: state (of which you are resident) doesn't like if you drive a vehicle registered in other custom's zone. Doesn't matter if the owner is your father. Check this forum for consequences, which can be very serious.

Assuming your dad already lives here that might add CHF 37 per 100kg and 7,7% VAT on current value.

What is your plan eventually? Will you register here? Will you move on to for example Italy? If you plan to stay here longer than 3 months you must register.

Re: Importing my motorcycle into Switzerland from USA

The Africa Twin with the CoC from Honda should not be much of a problem.

The CRF250 Rally is another issue. Due to stricter European emission rules it most likely will not be street legal. If you are happy to trailer it around to the few off-road, motocross, and enduro parks.
Even the US CRF250L and the European CRF250L are two different bikes. The latter is heaviliy castrated in power to meet the emission limits.

See the information by Swiss customs, about the custom formailities regarding tax and duty free importation as part of a relocation and moving of houshold goods (including vehicles)
https://www.ezv.admin.ch/ezv/en/home...itzerland.html
https://www.ezv.admin.ch/ezv/en/home...ts--etc--.html

If you do not relocate your residency tax and duty will be due.

Be aware that getting license plate, passing road worthines inspectin and registering it for road use is different from importation and handled by a different authority.

They sell it here, it's Euro 4.

Whther it's the same as the US version is another matter.

Oh. I see I was specially thinking about the CRF250R, which is not the CRF250 Rally. Too many CRF variants to be had.
All good and street legal if there is a CoC which shows Euro 4 conformity.

Re: Importing my motorcycle into Switzerland from USA

Given the costs (and hassle) and that a new Honda CRF 250 RL Rally is 6.000,- Chf I would not be bothered by that one and just sell the current one in the states.

The Africa Twin holds much more value so you have to do the math yourself on that one and see if it is worth it.
