Rented a Mobility car without noticing the existing damage

Hello everyone, I need some advice regarding car rental issues.
I rented a car, a transport more specifically, from Mobility a few days ago. There were some scratches on one side of the car but I didn't notice that at the beginning. The parking place was a little dark and I was in a hurry. Maybe the previous user made those scratches. Then I found it when I parked it. I didn't realize that it was a serious issue and I was supposed to report it before I use it. I made a big mistake as I thought 'maybe' Mobility already knew it, so I just parked and left...
Two days ago I received a call from Mobility telling me that I need to pay for the damage if they couldn't find the person who did it. The bill will be more than 1500 CHF. Now I am waiting for their investigation. The problem is that I didn't do it, so I really don't want to pay for it.
I know I made a stupid mistake but is there any way for me to defend myself if they couldn't find the guilty person? I have a colleague with me when I was using the car and he can prove that I didn't do it. Will that be helpful?
Any help will be appreciated! Thanks!

I have always found them to be helpful in resolving issues.

You have a witness, the parking lot may have some camera, the idiot who did it might fess up if asked etc.

Write them a letter stating the damage was already there when you took the car.

The mobility cars often have little damages here and there.

They also have telematics I think, they might be able to look at that data and figure out something.

Everyone has a video camera that time/date stamps a video. A walk around takes 60 seconds max.

Do it on pickup and drop off and you are safe.

Thanks. Hopefully they could solve it properly. In fact I went to the parking lot again and checked the environment. There was a camera but not sure if it recorded anything useful as it locates a little far from the car. I called them back again and provided this information. They told me to wait. I will update once I got their reply.

Yes, a good lesson. Sure I will check the car ten times before starting next time.

Re: Rented a Mobility car without noticing the existing damage

Update: for those who want to know the result.
I finally received the Mobility bill of December and the charge for the damage was not counted on me.
I called the customer service twice after I received the first call to explain and provide extra information about the parking place. I was told to wait for their investigation which might take a week, and if they don't call me again in one week it means they have found the guy.
So I guess they found the guy because I never received any call from Mobility since then.

Thanks to all those who tried to help, and hope my experience will help someone in future.

Last but not least, to myself and those who didn't know, CHECK IT CAREFULLY BEFORE STARTING A RENTED CAR!!
