Re: Where to buy vignette 2020?

Saw this a little too late. Two days past the deadline I got busted. 200 bucks for forgetting to buy a sticker!?!? And honestly after 12 years of never forgetting, this year I failed to notice the hundreds of passive reminders posted everywhere, and so did my wife. I still can't understand why there isn't an automatic billing from the SVA that makes one show up in the mail every January. Oh yes I can, because that 200.- is some real sweet, juicy meat for the vultures hanging out on the entrance ramps.

Or better yet, how about a general tax for all registrations so a Swiss number plate means you have the right to drive on the Autobahn. Case in point if you have a Wechselnummer, you still have to buy a separate sticker for each car, a huge double standard. And before you call it a luxury use tax, consider that even those drivers who don't use the Autobahn benefit greatly from its existence and maintenance. So scamified.

Neither a safety hazard nor an intentional violation, yet it's as great a fine as trying to run a red light, passing over a solid line or doing 100 in an 80km/h zone. Makes extraordinarily clear that tax revenue is much more important than public safety. Ridiculous and unjustified.

Re: Where to buy vignette 2020?

Not all Swiss car owners drive on the motorways. Why should they pay for something they never use?

In 2022 you will have the option of having the vignette linked to your number plates. They are working on it.

The only reason those side roads aren't backed up bumper to bumper twice per day is the wonderful Autobahn keeping them clear. That's for every driver's benefit. That's why it should be a general tax, like all others where you pay even for the general-welfare services you don't use. Not to mention the primary purpose of the Autobahn is supposed to be military transport – definitely a general welfare service.

You don’t commute into Geneva on the A1, do you. It’s now bumper to bumper from 0715 to 0930 and 1645 to 1915. Poor value for money.

If that's the case, why are the side roads backed up bumper to bumper twice per day?

Needs more Autobahn. Imagine how much worse they'd be without it. I'm paying more than my share this year! But a general tax would make those streets even clearer. Or, take part of the general tax and use it to subsidize train tickets to get more cars off the road.

I would guess that most people who drive on the Autobahn without a vignette are intentionally evading payment. It's a bit hard for the police to determine whether an offender has broken that particular law deliberately or not.

But more interestingly, I'd love to know in which part of Switzerland you can run a red light, speed by 20km/h, or cross a solid white line for the bargain price of just CHF 200.

That's your opinion. And a really ignorant one. As if they're the only ones driving cars.

I'm averaging hyperbolically:
100 in an 80 is about 160.-
Running a light in Zurich 240.-
Not sure what passing in a non-passing zone is.

The point is, these are all safety issues. Forgetting a sticker is not. And if I bought a sticker every year for 12 years, still having last year's sticker in the window, should be clear I wasn't evading the rules. But sure, the benefit of the doubt is always on the side of the police. Maybe a lower fine would be more appropriate just in case?

100 in an 80 zone is 240,- outside town if it is on the highway it is 180,-
Red light in Zürich is 250,- (tho that is the minimum, if they deem it was dangerous than a couple of months without license and fined in the 4 digits is normal)
Overtaking while there is a sign that does forbid overtaking will be decided after research so be lucky if you get no point, no driving ban and only have to pay a couple of hundreds.

The sticker is not about safety but about tax. By forgetting the sticker, you dodge tax.

(180+250)/2=215 = same ballpark so what's your point – it's still safety related fines vs 500% tax penalty nonsense.

I keep forgetting, is the list of worse offences tax evasion, speeding, loud noise after 2200, then murder? Or is it speeding, tax evasion, murder, then loud noises?
