Getting a Halbtax shortly after arriving

I'm moving back to Switzerland! Will be flying to Zürich on March 1st.

I want to make a relatively long train journey on the 4th. The tickets are quite expensive (surprise!), so I'm wondering if I can get an annual Halbtax (not the 1-month visitor one) so soon after arriving.

Is a residence permit required to get a Halbtax? I don't think I can get mine that fast.

Assuming they'd agree to issue me a Halbtax, could I use it immediately (e.g. with a provisional paper printed one), or would I have to wait to get the proper one on the post?

I applied for one before I moved, this is possible from some countries.

These days you need a SwissPass https://www.swisspass.ch/embeddable/register/1 to load your demi-tariff on. Once you have one loading a discount card is easy.

Ah, this is interesting. Did you apply online or mail a form? Was the Halbtax waiting for you to pick up when you arrived, or you got it in some other way?

As far as I can tell, I need a physical SwissPass before I can do anything on that website, so not much I can do ahead of time either

I don’t think you need a residence permit to get a halb tax. When you land at Zurich, go to the Sbb and see if you can get a Swiss pass and halb tax right away. They’ll probably give you a temporary thing that you’ll need to show with an Id until your card is created.

When we came here to look for an apartment (before we had our permits), we got our halb taxes as soon as we landed. No problem. This was before the Swiss pass, but I can’t imagine the process is that much different.

You don't need a residence permit to apply, just a passport. You can get a halbtax immediately, they will give you a temporary paper one to use until the Swiss pass comes by mail.

That's exactly what I need. I hope they still do that. Thank you

No. Everybody in the world can buy one.

Don't worry, there is no agreement to be made, it's a product you purchase.

Yes.

I arrived in Zurich by train, went to SBB counter, bought the Halbtax, then bought a halbtax fare ticket to get to the hotel. I used the station's address as reference, since I had no other at the time, and came back after 2 weeks to pick it up. I didn't have any photos, but in Zurich main station there's a photo booth close to the ticket office, you will need 6 or 7 CHF in coins.

Just make sure you arrive during the ticket office opening hours

Ditto. I flew into CH and went straight to the Zürich Airport train station. A few minutes later I had a temporary half fare card in my hands and a half fare ticket to my destination in GR. I requested that they send the SwissPass card to my destination train station in GR. It arrived there about ten days later. Very easy. It's clear, though, that they are unwilling to mail the SwissPass to a foreign address. If you don't have an address in CH yet, just use your local train station as the delivery address.
