it's a thinking that might not make sense at all - hence the thread for the experienced ones to tell me!
Oh no, your wishes do make sense but the budget seems a bit unrealistic .

I wish you good luck with finding what you're looking for!

I think that you may be able to get into a BMW M2 for your budget, give or take... it fits all your requirements, but much more than your suggested 200hp. I’ve read that the M2 is the best M car that BMW makes, or has made for many years.
I own one and can attest to it being monumental fun. (I had the choice to get an M3 or M4, but based on all the reviews went for the M2. Staff at the dealership said that I made the right decision)
The only thing that I can’t guarantee is the depreciation.

How about this I found yesterday? Not an actual M2, but should be close shouldn't it?

Nice!
So this spring you and the family can even go topless.
Pretty cool having the service history on the dash.
Assume that only shows up if serviced by a BMW garage?

In the "special needs" sense of special... still a better idea than an early Evora.

I know its over the budget but I am pretty sure it would keep the value if you only drive it for one season: Alpine A110. The used ones are going for 50-60k and I guess based on how stable the price since it came out that putting 10-20k on one will not depreciate it much - so an investment, but one that might in the end be cheaper than spending 5k on a Subaru with 270k km on the clock... Its a proper drivers car, looks better than sports cars twice the price and from the set-up just right for Swiss mountains.

The Alpine is also a pure pleasure, but as you said, it's quite the price tag.

Re: Sports car on a budget

Hi User137,

Long time ago I used to play with rally cars, escort rs2000, and sometimes the most fun on stages was had by the 1300 class cars !

So here's my suggestion, relatively cheap, so can be bought and kept as a secondary car, seats 4 quite comfortably, and can be driven with the foot flat on the floor, bends and climbs as well as circuits !!

Just remember Paddy Hopkirk in Monte Carlo Rally, upset a lot of bigger more powerful cars !
Have Lots of fun.

235/240 are very far away from an M2 or any M car for that matter.
You'll spend a lot to bring it close dynamically so price-wise makes little sense.

Engine wise with a tune you get close to base M2, but if you start wanting more out of the car and start driving it with DSC off the engine response will be a deal breaker at that point. Close friend had one and sold it for that reason.

Early V8 R8 is not a bad choice actually, but I'd stay away from the R tronic.

I love the Mini, but all my friends who have one (sample size = 2 so a bit off) have a mandatory permanent hobby to keep it running somehow. :-)

Cheapest M2 on the market has double the price of the M235i I linked above. I understand perfectionism, but am not sure if I need it that much.

(someone who just wants performance and best-in-class handling would not even consider a cabriolet in the first place )

Re: Sports car on a budget

Get a 2nd hand MX-5 and spend the rest on a bigger car. Forget the full specs hard-top version, it's just fine with the entry-level engine. You can do any road flooring it if it's dry
Non-plus ultra: you stay out of jail and keep your license, because it just feels fast.

how about a Maserati grantourismo as a wildcard, and pray daily it does not need any major work, good back seats, v8 and the autobox is good (if you like that kind of thing)

Re: Sports car on a budget

Couple less common picks in this land of european sports cars...

Infiniti G37 coupe... Its basically Nissan 370Z with rear seat and automatic

Hyundai Genesis Coupe V6... reliable and cheap but lot less popular.
