Um...
Or indeed the Golf R already mentioned. It's pretty much the same as an S3 under the skin, 4Motion=Quattro, DSG=S-tronic, ~300PS engine...

The AWD in the S3 and the Golf R is the Haldex system and not the torsen. So it's not the full time AWD.

I'm off to try a M135i xdrive to compare to the Golf and see how it all workd out.
The 2 liter 4 pot in the Golf is pushing some serious power, I'll see how the 3 liter six feels in the BMW.

And?

We have two cars so equipped, an Audi TT and a VW R36. Having driven many thousands of km on snow and icy roads, I have to say their AWD system is just superb. The TT has less of a tendency to apply the traction control in twisty bends than the much heavier Passat, but in both cases you can turn it off at the touch of a button for a more sporty and still very predictable cornering experience.

Mind you, for real full-time 4wd you can't beat the old Landrover Defender, with fully lockable diff it just goes on almost any surface. I've not looked at the new one in detail, but there's something about the mechanical simplicity of mine that I just love.

Disadvantage of Haldex is that it's a bit more expensive to drive as it needs oil changes more often than a Torsen differential.

Mine is RWD only, from 5th gear up....

But if you want more excitement, you can always switch the manettino to ESC OFF.

Hey User137, long time not heard, and now spring is on the way .... please tell us all, What sports car did you get in the end ?
I didn't get anything as I got pretty deep under water in work

I'm currently looking at a BMW 3 ActiveHybrid, which is somewhat of a lead bullett, but kind of ticks all the boxes.

I had some MX5s and Porsche's but due to no time to go check them out they are mostly all gone by now.

plus how do you feel in a Golf as a "driver's car"

The M135i is also high on my list, let me know how it went.

The 135i was a fantastic little machine, felt a lot more driver focused than the golf.
I bounced around different ideas and went back to FWD with a Seat Cupra estate for the spec vs price and the looks. Looks neat without looking like a boy racer machine. I have a bike and the improving weather reminded me that I bought a car for the winter and that summer driving days are for the bike.

cheers - so it seems you didn't want a drivers' car in the first place too much?

I had a 600 Yamaha I sold last season. Happy to hear you liked the bimmer.

I had it in my head that I did, especially as my car died in february and the previous months had been very car focused.
After a few weeks without the car I remembered that my bike (S1000XR) is so much more fun and I only bought a car to cover the frosty times.
But now I have a second parking spot and am eyeing up an Mx-5 to fill the space, and for some unhelmeted summer drives.

Try and get the ND2 (184HP), it's worth it.

(and then sell it to me in a year or two, when I get rid of my 3 thanks!)

did you drive the 160HP version as well? There is about 40% price difference between these two.

Re: Sports car on a budget

So, it is done, got an m135i mapped to 400HP

It fits 4 adults, has rear doors for the family bits, and it's insanely way too powerful.

I'll let you know if I still have my license in 3 months, but until then... the Swiss passes await

The plan is to sell it with less than 3k loss in the winter.

nailed it! Hope it's only tires that it'll need, then it did a perfect job :-)
