Transport to Train Station Early in the Morning

Hi all, I have a question about the best way to get to the train station early. I'm flying out of the Geneva airport in several weeks. I live in Lausanne and need to get to Lausanne Gare around 4:30am and the metros don't run at that time. I've never taken a taxi or Uber, so I'm wondering, what's the best option? Best meaning most reliable, not necessarily cheapest (although less expensive AND reliable would be ideal!)... can/should I order a taxi ahead of time for that day? If so, any recommendations for which taxi service? Or will there be Ubers up and running that early?

Business or pleasure?

For pleasure travel there's the cheap IBIS Genève Aéroport hotel in Palexpo.

For business, you need to take a taxi and get reimbursed because most companies don't like to pay hotel stays. Taxis are very reliable. Once I had to take a 6AM flight to Gothenburg from Zürich and I reserved a taxi 2 weeks before. I was nervous but the taxi was outside the building at 3h50. The funny part is that the taxi costed as much as an airport hotel.....company expenses policy

Unfortunately it's a Thursday morning...

Thank you everyone for the advice! I am a student and finish exams the day before, so I need the night before to pack, not party. Looks like my wallet will be hurting from taking a taxi

Re: Transport to Train Station Early in the Morning

If you book upfront and ask quotes over for example gettransfer.com you should be there for 100,-

Adding the easiness, and price of hotels/other transport that really is not that bad.

I would hope she’s be able to get from somewhere in Lausanne to the station in Lausanne for less than 100chf even at that time of day.

If possible, you can stay at a Friend's who lives in walking distance from Lausanne Gare. We used to live in such a flat and were asked for this favour a few times

Ah, I was thinking Lausanne home to Geneva airport, misread the post.

Should be less than half in such case. (personally I'd just be lazy and grab the cab for the whole way unless the train ticket is already booked.)

Just getting to the train station in Lausanne is the question, I am taking the train from Lausanne to Geneva, and there are trains running at that time. I'm a poor student so taxi to train station, train to airport it is!

Still quite new to the area so unfortunately that's not an option yet

Re: Transport to Train Station Early in the Morning

How far is it to walk to the station? I've only been to Lausanne a few times, but it doesn't seem very big. But if you're worried about lugging a big case, take it to the station the day before and leave it at left luggage and have a pleasant stroll at 4am the next morning!

Taxibus.

Go visit the TL website, it’s explained. You pay a small fee (around 5.-) in addition to your bus ticket or normal bus pass, and the taxibus takes you from your nearest bus stop to the bus stop you want. You need to book them though (the phone number is on the site).

It's not the distance, but the slope! There is a 50% chance they need to walk uphill a very high slope to get to the Gare, which makes it very difficult.

Moreover, as they said they're a student, they may live in West Lausanne which is quite far from the Gare (But that 04h50 something train to GVA also stops as Renens, as far as I remember).

It does but I'm still *just* far enough for it be annoying to walk that far early in the morning. It's my backup plan if all else fails!

Re: Transport to Train Station Early in the Morning

Depending on your budget and pain tolerance, how about going to the airport the night before and camping out in the airport?

Done that a couple of times when I was a student.
