Why did I just get a SwissPass in the mail?

I have a pre-existing Halbtax Abo, and the dedicated Halbtax card, and have had it for almost a year. Now I just received a SwissPass in the mail from SBB.

I'm not sure why I'm getting it now... perhaps they just take their time setting up a SwissPass for newcomers? If I understand correctly this just means that I can carry only the SwissPass card now, and that any Abo's that I have will all be recognized/consolidated on the SwissPass (once I register it or whatever). So for example, right now I only have a Halbtax-abo but say I were to buy a Strecken-abo, I would just enter my SwissPass in when buying it, and it would get added.

Are there any other advantages to having the SwissPass besides just consolidating like this?

Re: Why did I just get a SwissPass in the mail?

The blue cards have been decommissioned and replaced by the SwissPass.
You are probably one of the last person which still had a blue card.

Be aware about the following changes regarding Halbtax on the SwissPass:
Quote:
When buying a Half Fare Travelcard you take out an indefinite contract. The advantage: your travelcard is automatically renewed when your validity period expires. Your SwissPass card is valid for several years and your travelcard remains activated on the same card.

Cancellation reminders.

We remind you of the possible cancellation date in good time, before the automatic annual renewal. You will receive this reminder together with your annual invoice. You can also subscribe in your customer account at swisspass.chLink opens in new window. to receive an e-mail or SMS reminder for this deadline.

Cancellation.

We will send you the invoice for the new validity period of your Half Fare Travelcard two months before automatic annual renewal. You will therefore have enough time to cancel your Half Fare Travelcard by the date specified, if you want to. Subject to the applicable deadlines, you can cancel your Half Fare Travelcard at any time, to take effect from the end of the payment period. This is very easy to do in your customer account at swisspass.chLink opens in new window.. We can of course cancel your travelcard at points of sale or by phone at the Half Fare Travelcard Helpdesk 0848 44 66 88 (CHF 0.08/min).

And if you link the SBB Mobile App with your SwissCard, half fare card and monthly passes are also visible there.

PS: You could already use the blue half fare card as a picture card for personalized monthly passes. The only thing which changes is that you now can load the monthly pass directly on the card.

An "advantage" is that there is no longer any other form of half fare card. SwissPass is all there is.

Ah, my first personal piece of bona fide Swiss ephemera!

Good to know, I will keep that in mind if I ever switch to being directly subscribed. My current Halbtax is a slightly discounted one through my work, so I think my HR dept would just let me know for the next renewal. I guess if I ever were to switch jobs I would just have the option of taking over the self-renewing Abo, without the discount.

Interesting.

The release of the Swisspass is over a number of years. I still see people showing the blue ones on trains. You notice them as they are the ones that don't need to be scanned. They are not old. There are just certain categories that have not been changed onto the new system and I seem to recall reading an article that said that there was at least one category for which no date is yet known as to when they will change onto the new cards.

Re: Why did I just get a SwissPass in the mail?

I went for my first trip where they checked tickets now, after having set up the SwissPass. I linked it to the app. I showed the attendant both the QR code of my ticket on my phone, as well as showing him my SwissPass. He said something fast in Swiss German that I didn't quite catch, but ending in "isch guet". I hadn't even thought of this but I guess when you link the SwissPass with the app, maybe they can see your photo through their backend database on their little handheld device, so don't even need to see the SwissPass... or? Do people carry their SwissPasses with them still? I guess if using for RFID functions like Mobility.ch or a Skipass thing... what else?

Or did I misread his reaction... maybe he was just saying... looks good you can put your card away now..?

Now that I think back about it, I realize that probably what triggered them to send me the SwissPass was that I enabled EasyRide. I don't know if it's necessary, but it correlates timing-wise. So maybe it's not a blanket "mail everybody with the blue card a SwissPass so we can phase out the blue cards" thing.

I was told that I didn’t need to show the Swiss pass anymore and that the QR code on the phone was sufficient as they can get all the info they need from that.

I guess that’s what he was telling you too.

This has been the case for a while now. I see a lot of people showing their phones. It saves getting the card out.

Re: Why did I just get a SwissPass in the mail?

Heads up for anyone in the same situation as me (sent a SwissPass and loaded a Halbtax Abo onto it, after previously having used a blur Halbtax card):

Make sure that you continue carrying the blue card until the Halbtax on your SwissPass becomes effective (you can check in the app, when this is). I have no idea why and assumed it would be effective immediately, this transfer. But I gave the attendant my SwissPass, and got dinged 5chf because the Halbtax Abo w/o blue card doesn't go into effect until March of this year. Now that my attention is drawn to this, I see that the app lists both the blue-card Halbtax as well as the SwissPass one that goes effective in March.

It's certainly confusing but the short story is, just continue to carry your blue card until you successfully get the SwissPass Halbtax to work once when they check it, after which you should be fine.

Yes they see a photo of you. You should look at him direct in the eyes
I think if you have say a Monthly Abo for Zurich you have to show the Swiss pass. If you have like a ticket to Bern lets say it won't appear on your Swiss pass so you have to show the QR thing on the phone. Thats enough. No need to show SwissPass Card. You can have the SwissPass on the phone also
